Chapter 13

When the clock announced 11 a.m., the timepiece played a melodious song as the hammer struck tiny bells. In response the older woman, who had been crocheting a blanket, got up from her seat, walked over, and took a bagged lunch from her cart. She returned to her chair, opened a wrapper, and started eating a homemade sandwich.

By that time Barbara was feeling hungry. The sandwich the woman was eating looked delicious. She hadn’t brought anything with her to have for lunch because she hadn’t expected to wait so long. Unfortunately, she would remain hungry. The thought of getting into her car to search for someplace to eat didn’t appeal to her. Instead, she rummaged through her purse for something edible, found a roll of Life Savers, and quietly sucked on them as the afternoon ticked away. An uncomfortable feeling began to creep in. She had to find a bathroom. The morning coffee was affecting her. She rose to her feet, walked over to the old lady at the counter, and interrupted her.

“Excuse me, but do you have a bathroom nearby I can use?”

“Yes, we have a bathroom in the back of the office. Just come through the door next to me, and you can’t miss it.”

“Thank you,” Barbara responded and made her way to the back office.

Seeing a door marked “Ladies’ Room,” she entered. Inside she was surprised to see the bathroom was clean and neat. Above the toilet sat a cute little plant on a wooden shelf that gave a homey feeling to the room.

When she finished, she walked out of the bathroom and examined the office area more carefully. There was only one other door, partly illuminated by a weak light coming through its frosted glass window.

Barbara guessed the office must belong to Sterling and stood there for a moment listening for any movement from within. After hearing no sound inside the office, she thought, This Sterling character hasn’t even been here. This whole thing is nothing but a waste of my time.

As she contemplated the door, the old woman asked, “Do you feel any better?”

Barbara turned and saw the old lady had been watching her the entire time.

“Yes, thank you,” Barbara replied.

The woman was still sitting in her chair, finishing the last of her sandwich.

Wanting some answers, Barbara said, “Excuse me, but is Sterling even in his office?”

“No, not yet.”

Disgusted, Barbara asked, “Will you please tell me why you haven’t said that Sterling isn’t here?”

The old lady smiled and replied, “Sterling will be along shortly. I’m sure of it. Now go ahead and have a seat back in the lobby, dearie.”

Barbara replied, trying her best to remain calm, “I’ve been waiting here for over four hours already.”

“Yes, I know, but sometimes you have to wait patiently for things that are worth having. This old world may be fast-paced, but there are times when you have to stop and smell the roses, watch the birds making their nests, and not be in such a hurry for quick results,” she proclaimed as if offering pearls of wisdom.
