Thunder that could only have been the resonance of the legions of hell marching up my street literally rattled me out of bed on what should have been a lazy Saturday morning.

Of course, that would’ve been par for the course, wouldn’t it? If the actual legions of hell had risen, it would really be just another day in Margie Land.

I laid there on the floor, my legs tangled in my chenille blanket, the fan whizzing overhead, and the first blushing light of daybreak through the blinds. I fumbled for my Slayer tumbler, hoping to hell I’d left myself some sweet, sweet coping juice for whatever this fuckery happened to be today.

Rolling onto my stomach, effectively burrito-ing myself in my blanket, I reached up and dragged it off the nightstand.

It was wine. Wine that had been great last night, but this morning tasted like shit and ass. I gulped it down anyway and considered just going back to sleep. There hadn’t been any screaming, so how bad could it be?

As a low, deep, panicked howl sounded from down the hallway, I knew I shouldn’t have even had that thought. In about t-minus three seconds, I was going to go from burrito to pancake under an absolute tank of an undead pit bull.

When he hit the doorway, full speed, with jowls flapping, bloody spittle flying, and that sad, sad, sound like a lonely air raid siren coming from his chops, he launched himself at me like an undead wrecking ball and landed on top of me, a canine boulder.

His whole body shook, and his eyes were big, and wild. It was almost like he’d been confronted with a murder scene he couldn’t see. Many dogs howled at doorbells, police sirens, some had other rather particular triggers, but my vampire pooch had a predilection for murder. If he passed a place where someone had been killed recently, we hadn’t quite figured out the timeline, he’d lose his ever-loving mind and tear it up. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to find the bodies, or he just wanted to destroy it. Either way, sometimes, it had come in handy.

This morning was not one of those times.

I tried to shove him off of me, but to no avail. Not that I thought I was going to make any progress until he calmed down, but I had to try.

“Can’t breathe, Buddy.”

He howled directly into my face, swiped his giant tongue up over my lips and shoved drool right up my nose. My nose tickled and I didn’t even try to stop the sneeze that blew his drool right back in his face.

He blew out a puff of air, and it might have been a sigh. Then he set to work licking his chops and my face once again, but he’d managed to calm down.

“What’s wrong, V dude? Huh?” I scratched behind his ears and his looked at me, his red eyes so forlorn.

He started howling again and it wasn’t long before Mina, Brooke’s vampire poodle, made her in way in and tried to nudge him off of me.
