Chapter 36

Marie

After a long week, the gala is just two nights away. Duchess Elizabeth was more than willing to help relocate the children to her duchy, which was no surprise to me.

Of all the nobility and royalty I have met over the past year and a half, I'd say Duchess Elizabeth is my favorite. She's a beautiful young woman who became a duchess the day her father, Duke Edward, passed.

Elizabeth's light brown hair, hazel-colored eyes, and lovely smile are enough to bring any man to his knees. Which is why I'm amazed she's still single.

I hang up the phone just as Alex steps out of his office. "Afternoon, Marie," he says, but there is something different about him. He seems nervous about something.

"Hi, is everything all right?"

"Everything is fine," he answers, but I sense otherwise. "Would you mind stepping into my office? I wanted to ask you something. Privately."

Privately?

I nod and then step into Alex's office. He shuts the door as I take a seat in front of his desk. I slightly tilt my head, trying to figure out what's up with him. He looks as uncomfortable as I feel.

"Everything is ready for the gala," I inform, trying to break the ice.

“That's good," he answers bluntly before rubbing his palms together. "Uh... I wanted to ask you something, but please don't feel obligated to say yes."

I start twiddling with my fingers. "Okay."

"I want to recognize you at the gala for your hard work and support. I won't let your efforts go unnoticed."

"I appreciate that," I reply, smiling. Although I was slightly embarrassed about Alex giving me that recognition at the festival, it felt good to be noticed.

"And in saying that...." he trails off again. I can see the wheels turning and the lips moving, but nothing is happing. He clears his throat and starts speaking again. "Marie, what I'm trying to say, is that with me seeking a wife, I don’t want a night filled with single ladies hassling me. I would prefer to attend the gala with a date. If you get what I’m saying?"

Where is he going with this?

I run my hands over my thighs. "I understand that. Who is it you wish to take?" I ask nervously.

"Well," he says, rubbing the back of his neck. "I was hoping you would be my date," he says, and my eyes widen in shock. Alex quickly holds up his hands and says, "Just as friends, Marie. Nothing more. It's just I could give you the praise you deserve, and at the same time, it would keep women off my back. At least for the evening anyway." He says, taking a step closer to me.

Heat is rising in my cheeks "I'm just a regular person, Alex. I mean, I‘m not royalty or anything. So, doesn't that look bad for you?"

He shakes his head. "Not at all. It's high time Eldomia knew that their king; notices everyone and everything. Without my citizens, what's the point of being a king?"

I smile at his words.
