Chapter Twenty-Nine

Jules let out moan when the first number they had for Jone was disconnected.

“Try the next number,” Becky urged impatiently.

“I am,” Jules said as she punched in the number. Her eyes widened with anticipation when someone picked up, and she put the phone on speaker so Becky could hear, too.

“Hello?” the voice said again.

“Hi, is this Jone Salter?”

“It is,” she said, her tone suspicious as if she regretted picking up the phone.

“Hi, Jone, my name is Jules Dalton, and I’m here with my partner Becky Morgan. We own a small detective agency in Florida.”

“Okay ...” Jone dragged out the word. “What exactly can I do for you ladies?”

“One of the things we specialize in is family reunions that are made through DNA matches. Have you submitted an at-home DNA test?”

Jone seemed to hesitate for a moment and Jules held her breath. “Yes—yes, I did,” she said finally.

Jules gave Becky a thumbs-up. “We’re currently working on a case for our client, Donna Thomas. Your match to her is somewhat unrelated to the person we were hired to look for, but we wanted to reach out all the same to see if you would be interested in finding out more.”

“Donna Thomas? Is that her married name?” Jone asked breathlessly. “I did the DNA test, hoping to find my niece, Donna McDermott. I haven’t seen her in over twenty-five years.”

Jules’s shoulders relaxed, relieved for Donna’s sake that her aunt was looking for her. “Well, then we have good news for you. Donna Thomas is your niece, ma’am.”

Jone let out a squeal. “Oh, I have to tell my sister Kathy. She told me I’d never find her with a DNA test. But I thought maybe, if there was any chance at all, it would be worth trying.”

“Your sister Kathy, does she live in Fairfield, FL?”

“She does,” Jone confirmed.

“She’s only about twenty minutes from where we are. Would you prefer we talk to both of you together?” She gave Becky a small questioning shrug. It wasn’t far.

“I don’t know. Oh, maybe. I just can’t even believe this.” Jone was clearly flustered. “Can I reach out to my sister and call you back?”

“Sure.” Jules laughed. Jone’s excitement was contagious. “Can you see my number on your caller ID?”

“I can. I’m going to save you right now. What did you say your name was?”

“Jules. My name is Jules.”

“Okay, Jules, you’ve made me so happy. I’ll call you back.”

Jules turned to Becky, who was welling up. “I can’t help it,” she said as she wiped her eyes. “I just love this part.”

“And this isn’t even what Donna hired us for,” Jules reminded her.

Becky’s face grew serious. “Do you think we should have given the number to Donna and let her make the call?”

With adoption cases, they’d always been told the adoptee should make the first call if at all possible. Just in case there was no second chance.

“I considered that, but it’s not like Jone’s a birth mother who may decide to never talk to Donna. These are her aunts who seem excited to have found her.
