Penny saw the two men die over and over again every time she closed her eyelids. The horrific scene she had witnessed was burned into her brain, and into her retinas. Her skull ached, she could already feel a bump forming on her head, but she was not bleeding. No real harm had come to her.

After the assassin had disappeared and Penny had regained her breath, she had pulled herself up and run out onto the balcony. There was no trace of Lara. Had the assailant thrown her over the railing into the sea? There was no other conclusion to be drawn.

Penny had immediately raised the alarm by pressing the emergency button on the room phone—but at first nothing happened. The staff, including the security team, were probably still struggling with the terrible nausea that had incapacitated them. It no longer seemed to be an unfortunate coincidence. Had the assassin in black planned it all?

Penny ran to the door of the suite and carefully pulled it open. The hallway lay dark and deserted. Was the attacker still around? Unlikely.

She closed the door and ran back to the phone. Again she pressed the emergency button, then pulled out her cell phone and dialed Richard Lamberg's number. However, she couldn't reach the ship-owner. Only the friendly female voice of his voicemail answered. She tried Stephen, then Melissa, with whom she had also exchanged phone numbers.

Neither picked up. Her skull felt like it was about to explode at any moment.

Barely a minute later, a security officer finally appeared—an older man she had never seen before. But that didn't matter now.

“You have to make sure the ship is stopped!” she exclaimed after giving him a breathless, brief report of events.

He reacted quickly and efficiently. “I'll have the man-overboard alarm sounded immediately,” he said, already reaching for his cell phone.

Penny knew, however, that there was little hope for Lara. A fall from up here into the sea—that was a lot like jumping off the roof of a skyscraper. And even if you survived, a ship like the Fire Pearl took a few miles to turn around. After that, it was a matter of picking up a tiny human being in the dark nocturnal waters of the Atlantic. The swell had increased quite a bit—Penny had only noticed that now. Were they heading into the middle of the storm Richard Lamberg had warned her about?

As if all that wasn't bad enough, there were also the hungry sea creatures, which were only too happy to feast on a defenseless human being adrift in the ocean.

Oh God, what terrible thoughts.

Penny closed her eyes. Lara was lost. Lara, whose protector she was supposed to be. Lara, who was pregnant with Richard Lamberg's first son. The curse had claimed another victim.

But it wasn't some supernatural dark force at work here—Penny knew that now. Her client had been killed by human hands.
