Teddie meant it. She knew they had their first possible witness in a case that had at least five murder victims. She was not going to risk losing her. The killer might decide that she knew too much and would take the chance if it meant getting rid of her. Teddie had made a promise and she wasnât going to break it.
She was going to find this guy and nail his balls to the wall.
Chapter Twenty
'What are you still doing here?' asked Teddie when she spotted Jolanta still at her desk. The traffic back from the hospital had been much worse than she had anticipated, so she was going to end up working late again. Not that she minded this time. Not at all. This time they had something good. She could feel it in her gut. Like Kat said, it would never hold up in a court of law, but they didnât need Pamela Richardsonâs case to tie up to the Crochet Killer. They just needed her case to lead them to him. They could prosecute the two entirely differently if they wanted. They were still going to get him regardless.
'I was just waiting for the traffic to become less busy,' said Jolanta, 'I heard there has been a very big accident on the freeway. Besides, I wanted to hear how things went today. I was hoping that you would come back and I would get to see you.'
'In that case, get ready for some exciting news,' Teddie could not help but smile a little as she ran down the new findings to Jolanta. She thought she could even see her excitement starting to spread.
'Oh yes,' said Jolanta when Teddie had finished. 'That is very useful information. For me as well as for you.'
'Why for you?' Teddie couldnât think of anything that told them something that they didnât already know.
'This is the kind of event that changes things for a man like our killer. He will behave differently now.'
'Differently how? Iâm not sure that this is a good thing.'
'Sadly, I cannot say whether it will be for the good or for the bad. I just know that it will make him behave in a different way.'
'Tell me.'
'Of course, I would need to research it further, using some modeling techniques. But I think I can come up with a rough idea of what I think all of this will mean to him.' She stood up and walked over to the crime board. Teddie settled back in her chair and watched. 'For the first four victims,' she pointed at them in turn, 'we see that he is honing his technique but never changing it. The intervals are starting to get shorter. This is a natural consequence of the mind. The satisfaction he derives from the first kill, the fact that he has done something that was previously a fantasy, that lasts the longest. Plus the fear of being caught will stop him from acting again. He will still know at this point that he has done something morally wrong.
