Chapter 13

Anton

I was surprised when Evans agreed to help me plan a picnic for Liauna and I. He even packed the basket himself after showing me the perfect spot to take her to.

“Thanks, Evans. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this,” I say as he hands over the basket.

“Don’t mention it. We all have to get used to each other and sharing her attention. No need to be a dick about it,” he offers up.

“Are you sick?” I jokingly ask.

“What?” he asks, narrowing his eyes on me.

“You didn’t have a problem being an ass on the road. It’s weird for you to be so nice now.”

He laughs and pats me on the back. “With the Princess back, I’ve been able to relax more. You better keep her safe on this little outing. If you don’t you’ll have to answer to me.”

I nod with a little gulp. Even being half a vampire, I’ve seen what Evans can do firsthand. He may be a Fae but that guy can do some scary shit.

Forget Evans, you get to have some one-on-one time with Liauna. Focus, dude.

Shaking the images from my head of what kind of torture Evans may put me through, I head to our princess.

Liauna does not disappoint in her little sundress and sandals. Honestly, she has the kind of beauty that she could be in a paper bag and make it work. Effortlessly.

The picnic went amazing and it was nice but a little strange just to be the two of us. We took a walk around in the flowers and I was going to lean in for a kiss when we heard something behind us.

I was so comfortable with her that I let my guard down.

Uncle Jed and Aunt Sarah were taking too long in town to get groceries. I knew that I should’ve tagged along, but I insisted that the two of them go. They needed some time together, without me being a third wheel.

It’d been over two hours since they left. After the fourth time Aunt Sarah’s phone went to voicemail I knew I needed to make my way to town and check on them.

One thing about vampire speed was I could be there in half the time or less than a car. Normally, I didn’t run out in the open, but this day was anything but.

I started out the front door, in a slow sprint. Well, slow for me. The house was about twenty minutes from our local town. I got close to five miles from the heart of the city when the screams of fear and pain filled my ears. Damn, enhanced hearing. But I didn’t let it stop me. My uncle and aunt were my top priority. I made a fast search of the town and they weren’t anywhere to be seen. How could I miss them? I doubled back to the wreck and helped the living from their cars before heading back home.

When I arrived at the house, the front door was ajar. Something wasn’t right.
