Chapter 14: Rayne and Melia See a Dungeon up Close

“What’s going on?” Rayne demanded of Godric as they neared the outside door to the guardhouse. “This wasn’t part of the deal.”

“The deal is what we say it is!” Godric insisted. He snapped his fingers and a dozen guards circled around Rayne and Melia. Two guards each grabbed Rayne and Melia so they couldn’t fly away when they stepped outside.

“I think you need your wings clipped,” Godric threatened. “Now, don’t fight us, or we’ll just rip them off.”

Melia and Rayne both gasped. Having wings clipped was a horrible punishment for a pixie. They would grow back, but they wouldn’t be able to fly until they did, and it was very painful.

They both tried to shrink and fly off, but as they shrunk, the guards kept hold of them. Rayne even tried going invisible, but that just made the guards grip them harder. It didn’t matter if they couldn’t see him, he wasn’t getting away.

They were pulled to the guardhouse on the other side of the gate. It wasn’t far, so there was little chance for escape. Once inside, they were taken down the stairs one level to a dungeon. The door was shut and locked behind them.

Inside the dungeon, there was a moment where both were let go of, so they both turned small again and flew up near the ceiling. Unfortunately, there were no windows, only a small vent with metal bars that were placed right next to each other, so there was a little air that could get in, but nothing, not even a pixie could fit through the bars. The ceiling was low too, only seven feet high, so they couldn’t fly out of reach of the guards, who were high elves, thus all around six feet tall.

“What are you doing?” Rayne demanded. “My deal with Fardoragh didn’t include taking us prisoner. All I was supposed to do was bring the twins here and help find out how Evander is communicating with the human world.”

“Indeed,” Godric stated. “Yet, plans have changed. It seems that you are useful to us as leverage to use against your father and the twins. I am betting that they will take some stupid risks to not have you hurt.” He chuckled and mocked, “I saw you kiss Vanessa. She’ll take a risk for you.” He then added, “Well played. I assume that was to gain her trust so she would tell you how to communicate with their world, what technology would be used.”

Rayne hung his head in defeat, but said nothing back.

Godric then picked up a pair of large, metal shears and laughed as he mocked, “Shall we get started?”

The guards started to pull Melia over.

“No, let her go!” Rayne begged. “Don’t hurt her!”

“Him first,” Godric ordered, pointing to Rayne. “I want him to know how badly it hurts when he sees it done to his sister.”

“We can’t leave. You don’t need to do this. Have mercy,” Rayne pleaded. “What have we done to you?”

“Exist,” Godric answered.
