CHAPTER 14

SATURDAY MORNING I WOKE TO the sight of Mila leaning against the dresser. She didn’t say hi, didn’t respond to my comment about not seeing her. Her eyelids lowered over her eyes. I couldn’t help but notice how the tie of her black tank top accentuated her waistline. Or how the jean shorts showed off her legs. I loved that her bright pink toes stood out against her black flip flops. She was light and dark. As I made my way back up her body, stopping at her hands, I noticed a package. Not any package. A rectangle shape wrapped in the same bandana I used for Mort d’Evanoir.

I sucked in a breath. The events of the night before rushed back to me.

“Please don’t tell me...” Each word trembled more than the last. I covered my eyes with my arm, afraid to get out of bed. “That’s not what I think it is. Is it?”

No. No. No. Tierney hinted that the Hutchings had the book. Or I decided that they might have had it. I couldn’t remember.

“Z, you have to listen to me. Please don’t jump to conclusions.”

“No.” I shook my head. “I’m keeping an open mind. I’m listening.”

I bit the inside of my lip to keep from blurting out the truth. Every thought in my mind contradicted the words I spoke. She had the book. She was the only one who knew where I kept Mort d’Evanoir and now she stood in my room with it in her hands.

Mila unwrapped the item she brought. As expected, the book in her hands had the tell-tale brown leather cover. The gold-embossed lettering. Mort d’Evanoir.

“I didn’t take this.” She placed her hand on the cover.

I’d spent the last week trying to figure out where to even start searching for the book.

“How long have you had it?” I asked.

“This morning I woke up and it was on my bedside table. I swear. I did not take the book from you.” She enunciated each word while keeping eye contact with me. “Z, I didn’t take the book from you. Are you comprehending my words?”

Truth shone in her gaze. I wanted to believe her. Needed to believe her. But how could I? The evidence went against everything she said.

“You don’t believe me.” Mila sighed. “Okay. Along with the book, there was a letter.”

“A letter?” I asked.

She nodded.

“What did it say?”

She handed me a folded piece of paper. I unfolded it one corner at a time.

“Does it say who had the book?” I smoothed out the creases in the paper.

Mila shook her head.

Taking my time, I read the letter.

Mila,

You made a deal with Azami, which she will do her best to keep. But she won’t succeed. I will ensure that she fails. However, I have a task that if you succeed in completing, will ensure you find the banishment of your family lifted.

It’s a simple task. Return this book to Azami and end your relationship. You and your family will be allowed to apply to become members of the Evanoir Coven once more, so long as you never interact with Azami again.
