CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Advanced Love Department, Level One, Basement, FGA Tower, New York City, New York, United States

At first, Paris didn’t know why Aunt Alicia had given her such an ominous warning. The pain wasn’t at all that bad. It made Paris wonder if her demon blood made her threshold for such things higher. Then it hit her, and it was unlike anything she’d ever experienced.

The sensation started as gentle pressure, and then nothing about it was subtle or soothing. It felt like Paris had stuck her head in a vice grip and it was seeking to smash her skull like a watermelon.

In her fist, Paris flattened the foam ball at once. She screamed so loud that she was certain they could hear it on the floors above. She twisted and convulsed.

“Restrain her!” Faraday exclaimed. It was such a strange order to hear him give. It made him sound like a mad scientist. Even stranger was that he meant the order for Paris.

Then in a world of bizarre things, Paris felt her aunt's hands on her shoulders, pressing her down, seeking to keep her still.

Paris was stronger and instantly worried that she’d hurt the woman before her, who was trying to help. Something inside her was tearing to be let loose. To fight. To escape the pain that was making her brain feel like it was about to explode.

“Breathe, my love,” Alicia encouraged, her voice soothing and instantly reminding Paris of her humanity.

She wasn’t a crazed demon that needed to fight to survive. She was a woman. A person who had been spelled, and this was fixing her. She just had to endure the agony a little longer.

Sucking in a giant breath, Paris felt a tiny bit of relief, but it was quickly followed by what seemed like a blunt force. It was like she’d been struck. The only hands on her were Alicia’s, and they were holding her down and providing comfort.

Still, it felt like an anvil had crashed down from the ceiling and pummeled her straight in the forehead. Stars blurred her vision. The pain was so much that Paris thought she was going to bite her tongue and draw blood. She was vibrating from the electrical force convulsing through her.

It had started at such a low voltage, but in the sane part of her brain, she knew it was electricity making her brain feel on fire. It made her teeth shake in her mouth so hard she thought they’d fall out.

Her eyes bulged and watered. She smelled smoke. Hair burning. It was her, she knew, but was in too much pain to worry. She wasn’t worried in the least. Faraday wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t necessary. Aunt Alicia was still there, although she wasn’t holding her anymore.

It made Paris feel safe knowing she was close and Faraday was in charge. The pain was lessening, which was another relief. The buzzing that wasn’t just in her head lessened too.

Everything had started with such a jolt of pain that Paris hadn’t registered all the strange things.
