Chapter 6

Agent Young trailed Bonnie to a local park that was nothing more than a rusted swing set and old slide sitting on a lot of dry, brown grass and sand. Sagging Cypress trees surrounded the park, standing like tired old men who had grown bored playing checkers. He pulled into a small, gravel parking lot, and parked beside the Wagoneer. By now a heavy rain had begun to fall and the last thing he wanted to do was get wet. But, he thought worriedly, Bonnie's actions were suspicious and sneaky and he had to stay close. The last thing he expected was for Bonnie to jump out of the Wagoneer, hurry over to SUV, and tap on the passenger's window. “Let me in.”

Agent Young bit down on his lip and then decided to let Bonnie in. “I'm not in the mood for games,” he said in a gruff voice as Bonnie settled into the passenger's seat. “I've done as you asked me and kept my distance and maintained a legal watch.”

Bonnie pushed rain water out of her hair and listened to the heavy rain batter the roof for a few seconds. “I want to work as a team,” she finally spoke.

Agent Young shook his head and looked forward. “Get out.”

“You can either work with me or die,” Bonnie said in a voice that sent a chill through Agent Young's heart. “You said that we can't fight the tough guys because they have absolute power, right?”

“Money is power, yes,” Agent Young confessed.

“So is the media,” Bonnie explained. “Agent Young, I have a plan if you are willing to listen.”

“I want Moore's daughter and nothing else,” Agent Young snapped at Bonnie in a tired, exhausted voice. “I have exactly one week to find her or...”

“Or what?” Bonnie asked.

“You know what,” Agent Young snapped again. “My boss has grown very impatient with my failures, Ms. Mayberry.”

“The Russians have grown very impatient, too, so it seems.”

Agent Young turned his head and looked into Bonnie's eyes. “Yes.”

“I think we both know that you're a dead man even if you do find Agent Moore's daughter,” Bonnie told Agent Young. “I think we both know that the plan you had standing in the shadows isn't going to work.”

“You don't know my thoughts, Ms. Mayberry,” Agent Young said and looked back out into the rain.

“Oh?” Bonnie asked. “I've been thinking about the conversation we had in Pennsylvania. You stated very plainly to me that you were going to win this chess game. The only way that you can win is if you have control over the codes. Once you have control over the codes, you have control over the Russians.”

“The Russians are...” Agent Young bit down on his tongue.

“What?” Bonnie pressed.

“Not happy,” Agent Young admitted. He began to speak again when his cell phone came to life. As he listened to the cell phone ring he looked at Bonnie. “Okay, Ms. Mayberry, you want to hear the truth, then listen and don't say a word,” he said and answered the call.
