Chapter Sixteen
âI can explain.â The words spill out of my mouth as I spring to my feet.
âDammit.â Jose flings himself backward on the foot of the bed and lets his arms hang down until his hands touch the floor. âNow weâll never know what happens with Clive.â
âWhat are you really doing here?â Sophia is holding the nurse call button up like itâs a lightsaber. âWhy did you say all that stuff about pizza and Mr. Sims?â
âThere has been a misunderstanding.â I say this so much I should have it tattooed across my forehead.
Or not.
âI can see and speak to the dead and read minds. I can also communicate with your daughter. Ross Sims was not drunk. Kristin believes he had a seizure, but I do not believe thatâs the case. I think he was poisoned. By whom, I donât know yet. But this was not an accident, I do believe this was muââ I catch myself before I throw murder around, remembering how well that ended for me last time. âThe death was not accidental.â
âThe death was not accidental?â Jose lifts his head to look at me, bringing his chin to his chest. âIs that better than murder?â
âNot helping,â I mutter under my breath.
Sophiaâs thumb is hovering over the call button. âAre you saying someone tried to murder my daughter?â
I chose my words carefully. âIâm saying that I think Mr. Sims was poisoned, and if he was poisoned then ⦠Kristin was probably poisoned too!â Holy crap. âShe only ate one slice! Ross had multiple slices, and if the pizza was poisoned, then that would explain why he died and sheâs still alive but ⦠you did say they couldnât figure out why she had high blood pressure and kidney failure. Did they test for poison?â
Suddenly, a cacophony of alarms blares from all the machines attached to Kristin. Two nurses fling open the curtain and storm the bed, quickly getting to work, pressing buttons, calling out orders, and asking us to move aside.
âWhat did you do?â Sophiaâs voice is sharp with alarm, and sheâs staring at me. âWhat did you do?â
âN-nothing.â I donât think.
âPulse ox is low,â says one of the nurses.
âSo is her temp,â says the other nurse.
âGet up,â I hiss at Jose. âYouâre making her cold.â
Jose scrambles off the bed and floats out to the hallway while the nurses tend to Kristin. A man dressed in scrubs pushes a crash cart into the room, and I move out of his way.
While Iâm deeply concerned about Kristin, and I feel horrible leaving Sophia alone at a time like this, it feels like the right opportunity to leave. I still have one murder to prevent, and now I have one murder to solve.
Backpedaling to the door, I wait until Iâm in the hallway before I break into a brisk power walk.
âDid I do that?â Jose is floating beside me. âI think I touched her legs when I was on her bed. Did that make her croak? I made her croak. It was me.
