Part Two

Chapter 19

A Fallen Land

You surely made quite the commotion, Dorian thought as he watched Thatcher and Theo pass overhead, flying southward toward the kingdom as they evaded a volley of arrows. It was late into the last night of the second moon of the year 1170, one full day before the coronation.

The entire dune beneath Dorian became black as he drew his twisted sword. The archers, who were still alert along the walls, shouted as they saw his darkness. The drawbridge opened, and an army of sentinels poured out from the province, riding toward him until they quickly encircled the dune, surrounding him entirely. And after all this time, I have come to that which fate has destined… May he finally be reborn.

One of the sentinels stepped toward him and called out, “I know you, Dorian of Backgammistan. They called you a hero for defeating Thatcher so long ago… Ha! A traitor to your own people is all that you are!”

Dorian lifted his blade in front of him. “I know full and well who I am. But what of you?”

“Me? I am one who fights so that my people may have a brighter future.” The sentinel raised his own sword and shield. “As for you… It is time for you to face your mortality.” He rushed toward the warlock, and the rest of the sentinels followed.

Dorian sighed as he ducked under the sentinel’s strike. “I have exchanged my mortality long ago.” Turning, he stabbed his sword behind his foe’s shoulder, thrusting it down into his heart. The wounded Backgammi gasped as his essence faded into the blade.

Another sentinel rushed him from behind, rearing back to strike with an axe. Dorian thrust his sword into the ground, and the dark sands beneath them cackled with energy. In an instant, the entire battalion became immobile. The helpless axe-wielding sentinel watched as Dorian drew his sword up from the mound and thrust it into his chest. One by one, the warlock walked alongside each of the frozen Backgammis, killing each one and absorbing them into his sword. After a while, none remained.

The sentinels along the province’s walls continued launching barrages of arrows onto the dune. But whenever one came near, Dorian’s energy shot up from around him to block it. Having seen the warlock’s strength, no more reinforcements were sent out from Backgammistan. The drawbridge slowly rose, sealing him off from entering the province.

Dorian recalled the energy from beneath him, returning the sands to their normal shade. He felt the many knights and sentinels falling back around the citadel. Even the bowman along the walls had retreated, ceasing their rain of arrows.

It is finally time for me to return home, Dorian thought as he lifted his blade toward the province ahead. Dark beams shot down all around him. As each struck the ground, one of his minions would emerge. After summoning the entire battalion that he had just killed, Dorian continued conjuring shades. Knights, sentinels, priests, and peasants all materialized around the dune.
