I drove carefully back down the gravel road, avoiding puddles that as far as I knew could be a foot deep. A herd of deer sheltered from the cold wind under nearby trees, and sheep minded their own business as they kept the grass short. The rain had started to pick up and big drops landed on my windscreen. Charleton House was beginning to vanish behind a wall of grey weather.
A lone figure came into view as I turned a corner. Suzanne was on another of her runs. I would have thought her crazy, but then it would have been dry when she set off. I wound my window down as I slowed next to her.
âDo you want a lift?â
She hesitated, and then jumped in. âThanks, even I have my limit and that rain is really coming down.â Her hair was plastered to the side of her face and her clothes clung to her athletic physique.
âIâm impressed you set off at all, itâs a miserable day.â
âI needed to get out, clear my head. Running really helps. Where have you been?â
âI went to see Amelia and Patrick; I thought theyâd appreciate some home cooking, save them the trouble. I canât imagine theyâre in the mood for anything other than shoving something in a microwave.â

âNot at all, unless you count the press and the police. Both have been hounding them. It was nothing to do with them, theyâre victims too. Their wedding was ruined, their week here has so far been spent hiding in the cottage to stay clear of journalists and photographers. Theyâre finding it really hard.â
âWhy are the police interested?â I looked over at her. Her face was set hard and she stared straight ahead. For a moment I thought she wasnât going to respond.
âPatrick and Nathan were seen arguing a couple of times, but itâs hardly surprising. You find an ex-boyfriend of your wife is going to be your wedding photographer and Iâm sure most people would be livid. I know Patrick can have a temper, but itâs nothing serious. Iâve known him since I was eighteen and he wouldnât hurt anyone. Heâs a nice guy, he just raises his voice, like a lot of people. He should be left alone.â It sounded like a demand, not a wish.
âHow well did you know Nathan?â
âWell enough to know that he got what he deserved.â
âReally?â Distracted, I drove us through a pothole that caused us both to leave our seats. âSorry, what do you mean?â
âNothing, I just meant⦠he was a complete jerk about Amelia leaving him for Patrick.â She had softened her tone a little.
As I drove slowly down a straight stretch of road, I considered the woman next to me. She was extremely fit and the line of muscle definition in her arms showed how much strength she possessed. Had I just
