Figure 4.1

The Great North Road. The North Road was named “great” in reference to the famous Roman road running north through England. This map combines elements and information from Bureau of Land Management surveys (Copeland 2014; Nials, Stein, and Roney 1987), Solstice Project research (Sofaer, Marshall, and Sinclair 2008), Earl Morris’s excavations (Carlson 1966), and my own observations. The North Road was not, of course, perfectly straight as shown here; it zigged and zagged, tacking through a series of slight deflections within a 1 km wide corridor. And it veered off to the northwest down Kutz Canyon; as explained in the text, claims that the road ended at Kutz Canyon are a canard.
