Chapter Thirteen
Wednesday Late Afternoon
Chief Merrill parked her police cruiser in the parking lot behind the Melody Manor owned by Sarah Richards and strode up to the side door. She hadnât talked to Sarah since they had a falling out about a parking issue. The owner had three designated spaces behind her B&B and when it was full, she instructed guests to park in the church parking lot next door. The pastor wasnât happy about it and complained. So, when the chief approached Sarah to discuss the problem, Sarah slammed the door in her face.
Today, she wondered how receptive Sarah would be to her asking a few questions. She rang the doorbell several times and when Sarah didnât answer, she tried the doorknob, found it unlocked, and walked in. âSarah,â she called. âItâs Chief Merrill. I need to speak to you.â
Sarah came down the hall. âWhat do you want?â she said in an unforgiving tone of not letting bygones be bygones.
âIs John home?â
âMy ex-husband John? You know as well as I do that he passed away. You came to the funeral.â
âI meant John Jr.â
âWhatever do you mean? John doesnât live here.â
âThis is the address on file with the work release program.â
âOh, that,â she said dismissively. âHe uses this address for his business, but he lives on the other side of town in the trailer park.â
âCould I have his address?â
âWhy?â
âI need to talk to him.â
âAbout what?â
âLetâs start with you giving me his address.â
âOh, all right. Thereâs no need to be pushy. Itâs 720 Chesterfield Road, trailer #30. Itâs a rusted piece of junk. You canât miss it. Now, what do you want with John?â
âDo you know his whereabouts over the weekend?â
âYeah, why?â
âWhere was he?â
âWhy donât you ask him yourself?â
The chief grew impatient with Sarahâs inabilityâor unwillingnessâto answer simple questions. âDo I have to haul you off to the station to formally ask you a few questions?â
âWell, no. I have a business to run.â
âAllow me to repeat my last question. Where was John on Friday night?â
âHe was here at the B&B.â
âWhy? Does John work here?â
âYes, when Iâm out-of-town, John takes care of the Manor.â
âYou mean take care of the guests? Do you have a register with their names and addresses on it?â
âWhy, sure. Itâs right here,â Mrs. Richards said, fumbling through a stack of papers. âHere it is. Friday through check-out Monday morning.â
The chief studied the list of names. Not finding what she was looking for, she asked, âDid a Maggie Murphy stay here over the weekend?â
âIf her name isnât on the list, then she didnât stay here,â Mrs. Richards said with a scowl. âWhy does everyone think she stayed here?â
âWhoâs everyone?â
âOh, her daughter and her friend. Theyâre staying here right now.â
The chief backtracked. âI see three names here, staying in three rooms. I assume married couples.â
âYes. Of course, theyâre married. What do you think, Iâm running a brothel here?â
âHow many bedrooms do you rent out?â
âFour,â Mrs. Richards answered.
âSo, you werenât fully booked over the weekend?â
âNo.â
âOne of your rooms was available?â
âNot really, because John stayed in that room.
