I wake up to the feeling of being lowered onto a soft surface. When my eyes flick open, all I see is Evan. The glow of the moonlight casts a dull, silver-blue hue over his face, rudely reminding me of those dimples that make him look faintly approachable through his typical hard scowl. And that’s when it occurs to me. Evan has a resting bitch face too—albeit an adorable one. Maybe we’re more alike than I thought.

I search the depths of my soul for the disdain I felt for him when I first arrived in Cora’s Cove, but come up with zilch. Then again, it’s hard to hate a man who’s carried me to bed like a princess. A man who is leaning over me, quite literally tucking me into bed.

“This is the second time you’ve had to carry me to bed,” I mumble through a stretch, half conscious as he begins to bed down on the air mattress below me.

He lets out a soft chuckle as he strips himself of his shirt. “You better remember this service when you write your review.”

“Oh, I will,” I promise, squeezing my eyes shut. It’s not that I don’t want a peek of Evan shirtless. Quite the contrary. But after tonight, after the way he touched me under our makeshift blanket, I’m not sure I could handle it. In fact, I’m scared I’d lose all control. “I might even consider that tiny little thing you did on the boat too.”

“And what was that?” he asks over the creak of the air mattress.

I turn over, propping myself up on my elbow to peer down at him through the darkness. “You saved my life.”

His eyes remain closed, and he shrugs like it’s no big deal. Just a normal day in the life of a maritime lobster fisherman. “Minor details.”

“No. It is a big deal, Evan. Thank you. Really.”

“Well, we’re even. Because you saved mine too,” he says in a voice just barely above a whisper.
