Traveling had given Dylan a new appreciation for fresh fruit and vegetables. Foods not dried or preserved had taken on an almost divine quality to his taste buds. Soft cheeses were also sorely missed, but he would have to keep on missing them since Lali had ordered a hard cheese that would last for weeks. All in all, it was a satisfying meal. The old woman had even included a bottle of milk for Kio, something they hadn't requested. Dylan was glad that he tipped her almost as much as the supplies had cost.

But now his mind was as troubled as his stomach was contented. The idea of leaving Lali behind seemed somehow irresponsible. He couldn't help feeling Tyjinn would be disappointed in him for abandoning his friend, but he saw no other choice. He and Kio could not split up, one of them staying with her and the other going ahead to whatever awaited them. Such an idea was unthinkable.

"We could go to a different town together, further down the road," Dylan said. "There's a green mother in almost every village."

"Don't tempt me," Lali said. "It was hard enough getting me to admit I had a problem."

"I just don't like the idea of leaving you here with a bunch of strangers, and it's not like we're in any real hurry. We don't even know why we are going to the Cradle."

"We're going there because Tyjinn wants us to." Lali frowned and looked in the direction that Dylan and Kio would soon be heading. "We're doing it for him, but there are things that you need to know. Things I'm going to tell you now."

Dylan's stomach sank at the sudden seriousness of her tone. "All right. Tell me."

"It's possible that…" Lali hesitated and looked as if she were about to change her mind and not talk at all. She bit her lip before continuing. "It's possible that Tyjinn killed the Empress."

"Well, yeah," Kio said. "Anything's possible but there's no proof that—"

"He's killed before," Lali interrupted.

Dylan's entire body stiffened. He had searched so hard for an acceptable reason Tyjinn might have killed the Empress, and this revelation made that all the more impossible. Was now the time to tell the others what he knew? Did he really plan to keep it a secret, just to protect Tyjinn's reputation? He wasn't sure anymore.

"Who exactly did he kill?" Kio asked.

"Not a good person," Lali answered, "and he was just a boy at the time."

Dylan's mouth fell open. "Tyjinn or the victim?"

"Both. They were the same age, thirteen at the time."

"Well, was it in self-defense or what?" Kio asked.

Lali shook her head before changing her mind and nodding. "Did Ty ever mention his dog, Fenric? No? Well, he was crazy about that dog. He'd had Fenric since he was little and would take him everywhere, even to school when the teacher would allow it. They were really close, just as you two are. Fenric sometimes roamed the nearby woods on his own, which was usually never a problem since he always found his way home.
