The next morning came as a relief. A good night’s sleep had done me a world of good.

“Our time is our own, Nick. What would you like to do tonight?”

“Let’s go to our greenhouse. Kacchan hasn’t been out of the house in days. This will be a good way to start him getting ready for his traveling around with us again.”

“You’re getting good at the cat psychology, too.”

One of his ears flicked. “A reminder, because you asked. Today is payroll.”

I huffed a sigh. “Guess that’s what I’m doing after breakfast, not the greenhouse.”

“Kacchan and I will stay home and watch a movie.”

“You’re not coming with me?”

“Not today, my battery is getting low fast enough as it is.”

“That sounds like an excuse to me.”

“Excuse? I don’t make excuses. This is a fact.”

“It’s also very boring for you. Admit it.”

“If I can be home with Kacchan, keeping him company while you’re away, that’s the responsible thing to do. He’s been alone enough, now that Owen’s got a girlfriend.”

My jaw dropped open. “Wait. He has a girlfriend? When did that happen?”

“Two and a half weeks ago, I think. It’s Riley. I haven’t heard him say her name, but that’s what’s on her phone. Just things like sweetie. And babe. Names you would give to a pet you don’t like.”

“I’m sure that he likes his girlfriend. Pet names aside, how did you find out?”

“I have very good hearing. And it’s good for us that I keep an ear out for what Owen is doing these days. He has a direct impact on your happiness.”

My happiness. That was true. My uncle Owen was precious to me. “If it’s the Riley I know, I’ve met her once or twice, in her mom’s aviary. Can you tell how serious they are? How often do they see each other, for example? What kind of dates do they go on?”

“I’m not going to hack his cell phone. That would make you mad. And him.”

“That’s not what I’m saying. I’m just curious if you can extrapolate any facts for me from the information you can passively gather. For example, is Birdie her mother?”

“I will accept this as a new task,” he said.

“Okay. First, breakfast. Then payroll. Keep an ear out for Owen and his girlfriend. Eavesdrop discretely, okay?”

“You know eavesdropping is illegal. I’m simply going to monitor the environmental sounds of our home and report anything noteworthy to you.”

“You’ve been reading the legal novels again, haven’t you?”

“One of us has to, if we’re going to be investigators.”

“Smarty cat.” I ruffled his hair.

So, what was it going to be? Hipp Subs then the greenhouse? Or Hipp Subs, sleep, greenhouse? Hipp subs was just payroll and ordering. That could be done from home. Perfect, they didn’t need me. I pulled out my phone to make a quick call before Alan went home for the day.

“Can you email me the time sheets? I’ll fill in the hours from home so that payroll gets done on time.”

“Sure, boss. Not a problem. Bring in some avocados next time you swing by, okay? We’re getting low.
