Shortly after the storm lets up, Wendy texts me

Have you heard anything from Mia?

No. But I don’t have her phone number. I take it you haven’t heard anything?

Nope. But I have her address.

I think we should pay our friend Mia a visit. I have some questions for her.

Pick me up at the bookstore!

Not only is Mia still a suspect, but I think she may be able to help me with some questions I have about poisonous substances in general. And I’m sure Wendy wants to see how her cure is progressing.

So far, Mia and Ivan are the most likely suspects on my list. I’m convinced they would know how to poison someone, and make it look like a heart attack. They also have a strong motive for wanting Dillon dead. For different reasons, of course, but they’re both pretty angry.

When we arrive at Mia’s studio apartment, I assume she’s home because her door is cracked open. Does she always leave it like that? That’s unsafe!

“Hello?” I call out softly while rapping my knuckles on the door jam.

“Mia? Are you in there? It’s Wendy and Holly from the bookstore!” Wendy leans in to shout.

When her door creaks open a little more, I jump back. I don’t want to startle her. What if she thinks we’re burglars?

“Mia! We’re wondering how your face is doing,” Wendy says.

“She’s not here,” her next-door neighbor tells us after peeking her head out of the door.

“But her door was open.”

“I haven’t seen her for a couple of days.”

I push the door open a little more, screaming at the horrific sight in front of me.

“What is it?” the neighbor asks, running to join us.

“Her apartment has been ransacked! We have to call the Sheriff! She might be injured. Or dead!”

“Oh, it always looks like this,” the neighbor assures us. “I’m Blair, by the way.”

“But you said you haven’t seen her for awhile, so why was her door open? I assume she doesn’t leave it like that when she’s gone,” I point out.

“Yeah, her place is a disaster most of the time, but she definitely doesn’t leave the door open when she’s gone,” the neighbor admits. “Do you think something happened to her? She told me last week she thought someone was following her. It made her nervous, so I know she wouldn’t just leave the door open if she wasn’t home.”

“We’re calling the Sheriff!” Wendy and I exclaim in unison.
