LIAM
Liam couldnât remember the last time he was tongue tied. Maybe it was that seventh-grade field trip when he had to share a bus bench with Jenny Flynn on the way to the local art museum. Or maybe the time he had to recite the infamous âFriends, Romans, Countrymenâ monologue from âJulius Caesarâ for his 10th grade English class, proving once and for all that he would never be an actor. But he sat at the table in front of Jackie and Andy and was absolutely speechless. It could have been the nerves. It could have been the weariness from an exhausting evening. Or... perhaps it was Andy, who was radiant in the light of the tree and not at all like someone who was about to interrogate him...
âYoo hoo,â Jackie whistled, interrupting his rambling thoughts. âOver here.â
Blushing, Liam turned to Jackie. âSorry. Itâs just... itâs kind of exciting. This is my first interrogation. Not that itâs a... you know what I mean.â
âJust walk us through what happened last night,â Jackie replied.
âNot much to tell. Andy left the room to make coffee, the power went out, and Uncle Gary and I went to look for the fuse box.â
âYou didnât know where it was?â Jackie asked, puzzled.
âMother always had people that took care of stuff like that,â Liam answered, feeling a little embarrassed.
âUh huh.â Jackie scribbled in her pad.
Liam froze. As if just recognizing the motive behind her question. âWait. Are you asking if I had something to do with... what happened?â
âDid you?â
âNo.â Liam grew defensive. âAnd even if I was going to take it, why would I do it last night, when the house was full of guests? I couldâve gone into her study any time.â
âGood point,â Jackie nodded.
âDid anyone actually see you go upstairs?â Andy then asked.
Liam suddenly grew quiet. Something both Jackie and Andy noticed. Before he replied. âNo. There was no one else up there.â
