LIAM

Liam couldn’t remember the last time he was tongue tied. Maybe it was that seventh-grade field trip when he had to share a bus bench with Jenny Flynn on the way to the local art museum. Or maybe the time he had to recite the infamous “Friends, Romans, Countrymen” monologue from “Julius Caesar” for his 10th grade English class, proving once and for all that he would never be an actor. But he sat at the table in front of Jackie and Andy and was absolutely speechless. It could have been the nerves. It could have been the weariness from an exhausting evening. Or... perhaps it was Andy, who was radiant in the light of the tree and not at all like someone who was about to interrogate him...

“Yoo hoo,” Jackie whistled, interrupting his rambling thoughts. “Over here.”

Blushing, Liam turned to Jackie. “Sorry. It’s just... it’s kind of exciting. This is my first interrogation. Not that it’s a... you know what I mean.”

“Just walk us through what happened last night,” Jackie replied.

“Not much to tell. Andy left the room to make coffee, the power went out, and Uncle Gary and I went to look for the fuse box.”

“You didn’t know where it was?” Jackie asked, puzzled.

“Mother always had people that took care of stuff like that,” Liam answered, feeling a little embarrassed.

“Uh huh.” Jackie scribbled in her pad.

Liam froze. As if just recognizing the motive behind her question. “Wait. Are you asking if I had something to do with... what happened?”

“Did you?”

“No.” Liam grew defensive. “And even if I was going to take it, why would I do it last night, when the house was full of guests? I could’ve gone into her study any time.”

“Good point,” Jackie nodded.

“Did anyone actually see you go upstairs?” Andy then asked.

Liam suddenly grew quiet. Something both Jackie and Andy noticed. Before he replied. “No. There was no one else up there.”
