Detective Glen Scott looked up from his desk to find Agent Davison, his impromptu temporary partner from the FBI, hovering over him, his expression grim as he held out a file for Glen to take.

‘What’s this?’ he asked, but even as he reached for it, he knew the answer.

‘Sophia Evans’ autopsy report came back.’

Glen opened the file and looked down. He read carefully, his expression as bleak as his companion’s. Slowly he closed the file and placed it down on the desk. Leaning back in his chair, he finally spoke.

‘Has the family been notified?’

Davison shook his head.

‘We’ve been trying to keep it locked up tight. I didn’t want to risk any details being leaked to the press. I figured it would probably be kinder if we just went to see Adele Evans and told her in person. This is not the kind of thing we should be discussing over the phone. Besides, I’d like to re-interview her, see if she can add anything else to her original statement.’

Glen nodded as he stood, pulling his jacket from the back of his chair.

‘Where’s Lipnicki?’ Davison asked casually.

‘She’s working on something else at the moment. Why?’

‘No reason,’ he replied, ‘I just figured it might be a good idea to have a woman along, you know, to support Ms Evans.’

‘Boy,’ Glen snorted, as he slipped his gun into his holster, ‘you really don’t know Anna at all, do you? There ain’t nothing soft and fluffy about that woman, she’s a pit bull. She doesn’t do the whole ‘tea and sympathy’; in fact, in the whole ‘good cop, bad cop’ scenario, I’ll give you two guesses which one she usually is.’

‘You said she’s working on something else?’

‘Yeah,’ Glen replied, ‘She’s technically still a part of this case but in a more secondary role. I keep her in the loop but she’s working on something else. She ain’t telling and I ain’t asking. She’ll let me know if she wants my help.’

‘I see,’ Davison answered.

‘Disappointed?’ Glen smirked.

‘No,’ he replied stiffly, ‘I can assure you, my interest in Detective Lipnicki is purely…’

‘Professional…’ Glen interrupted in amusement as he turned to walk out of the office, ‘yeah, yeah, save it for someone who can’t smell bullshit a mile off.’

Davison rolled his eyes as he followed along behind him.
