Chapter 10

Heavy rain made Bessie cut her walk short the next morning. “At least we’re going to the House of Manannan and not Peel Castle,” she told her reflection as she dried her hair and face. It was just a few minutes after nine when she rang the bank in Liverpool.

“Ah, yes, good morning,” she said when someone answered. “I need to speak to someone in the lending department. I’m thinking about buying a house in Liverpool.”

“Certainly, let me connect you to Donald Plant. He’s one of our lending advisors,” the voice said.

“Oh, but, I mean, I was speaking to someone the other day, someone here, and they recommended that I ask for Erica Tucker. I gather she was able to help my friend a great deal.”

“I’m awfully sorry, but Ms. Tucker isn’t in today. I can assure you, though, that Mr. Plant will be able to do anything that Ms. Tucker could.”

“Will Ms. Tucker be there tomorrow? I’m sorry to be difficult, but she came so highly recommended, you see.”

“I’m not certain when Ms. Tucker will next be in the office. I don’t have access to her schedule.”

“Can I leave a message with you, asking her to ring me?” Bessie asked.

“I suggest that you speak with Mr. Plant,” the woman replied, sounding slightly annoyed. “He can answer your initial questions and start taking the information we’ll need. The entire application can be transferred to Ms. Tucker when she’s next available.”

“I’m not certain what to do. I think I’ll ring back tomorrow and see if Ms. Tucker is available.” She put the phone down before the woman on the other end could argue.

The last thing Bessie wanted to do was ring Grace and tell her that she’d failed to find her friend, but Grace needed to know.

“Did she sound worried about Erica?” Grace asked after Bessie had recounted the conversation.

“Not at all. She simply said she wasn’t available. Maybe Erica has the day off.”

“Maybe. I’d feel a good deal better if she’d told you to ring back tomorrow, though.”

“Yes, well, I will ring back tomorrow. In the meantime, if you think of anything else I can do, please let me know.”

“I was wondering if I should try ringing her ex-boyfriend,” Grace said slowly. “He’s here on the island. I’ve never met him, but she told me a lot about him.”

“Tell me about him,” Bessie suggested.

“I should have told you about him yesterday. I didn’t really think of him until yesterday afternoon, though. They went out for about a year when Erica was in her late teens, and they’ve stayed friends ever since. Erica told me once that he was the only person in the world that she trusted completely.”

“What else do you know about him?” Bessie asked when Grace fell silent.

“He’s a few years older than Erica. They met in a ShopFast car park. She very nearly hit his car when she was reversing out of a space. He was really nice about it, and after she was done apologising, he asked her out.
