When I went inside to dry off, Kyle followed me. I went into the laundry room where I had a few of my clothes hanging up. I had done laundry there earlier that week. I was both surprised and pleased when Kyle put his arms around me and engaged me in a long kiss.
“What did I do to deserve that?” I asked. “I’ll do it every day for the rest of my life!”
“You could have put him out in Dinwiddie or Chester for all I care,” Kyle said, laughing. “Really teach him a lesson.”
“Someone ought to,” I agreed. “Maybe someone who lives with him and is sick of his abuse.” The same old argument… When was Kyle going to stop being a victim? He deserved so much more than that…
“Don’t start that again,” Kyle warned. “Even if I left Ryan, what makes you think I’d jump right into your bed?” As if he wasn’t there already.
“You know you would,” I said. “You know you want to. Right now, even.” I uttered that last phrase with about as much Snagglepuss intonation as I could.
“What the fuck was that supposed to be?” he asked.
“Heavens to Murgatroyd… A homo who doesn’t know his Snagglepus?” He giggled, so I assumed the pink cat’s voice some more. “Come on, even… The classiest cartoon character that Hanna-Barbera had ever created, and you haven’t even heard of me?” When I had seen some comic on television making fun of Snagglepus, I thought that he had stolen my act. I had first started doing his voice while I worked at Water Country USA in 1994. We at the surf shop even considered him the unofficial mascot of the place instead of that annoying duck that walked around the park all day.
“I don’t have time for cartoons now,” Kyle said. “Wanna go out to the garage for a minute?”
“What for?” I asked.
“Come on, we’ll think of a reason. Ryan’ll be back soon anyway.” Kyle took my hand and we went out through the back door. This took us directly to the garage. I had never been out this door before except for the time we went to burn trash, something I felt was also on the agenda for the evening sans Mr. Carroll. “Know what I did in here once?”
“Let me guess…” I said. “You and Ryan had sex?”
“No,” Kyle said. “This one time, I was in here all alone, and I just had the urge to jerk off. Ryan was back in the house, so I just went ahead and did it. I just kept picturing all of these hot guys. He came out here to find me right after I had finished- he nearly caught me.”
“How long ago was this?”
“About a month,” he said. “If I had known you, you’d have been on my mind.”
“Does Ryan know about it?”
“No,” Kyle said. “He’s jealous of me even jerking off without him there. You know how he gets.”
“Yeah,” I said. “Tonight, he even threatened to kill himself.” I chuckled, but Kyle gave no reaction.
