"The thought has crossed my mind," said Earp.

"You know," said Holliday, "maybe you ought to go back to town right now and let me talk to him."

"I'm the marshal."

"Wyatt, you couldn't beat him when he was alive, and you sure as hell can't beat him now."

"Can you?" Earp shot back.

"I think I can," said Holliday. "But more to the point, we've talked a couple of times. We're almost friends. I can approach him."

"I can't let you take my risks for me, Doc."

"Let's be honest, just the two of us," said Holliday. "The whole reason you called me out to Tombstone was to take some of your risks for you. I'm your enforcer, just the way Ringo is the Clantons'."

"Is that what you believe?" asked Earp sullenly.

"It's the truth. None of you Earps can go up against Curly Bill when he's sober. You couldn't go up against Ringo when he was alive. That's just the way it is, Wyatt."

"I can fight my own battles."

"Then what are Bat Masterson and I doing in Tombstone?" said Holliday.

"Let's stop talking, and maybe we won't wind up fighting each other," said Earp.

"Whatever you say," answered Holliday with a shrug.

They rode the next mile in silence. Holliday became increasingly uncomfortable, not only from being atop the horse, but also because he had disdained a Stetson in favor of his derby, and the Arizona sun was beating down on his forehead and eyes.

Finally they sighted the barn, then a pair of corrals filled with horses, and finally the farmhouse, one of the few that boasted no brass anywhere on it.
