At Forbes Field in 1951, Ralph Kiner and Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams met during an exhibition game. Williams would later name Kiner as one of his 25 initial inductees to his Hitters Hall of Fame.

Thomas hit 30 four-baggers), the Bucs still managed to win eight more games that year than they did in ’52 Nonetheless, they ended the season in last place again, a distant 15 games behind the seventh-place Cubs. Murry Dickson led the league in losses for another year with 19, and no Pirate pitcher that year had a .500 season or better.

Ralph Kiner would play only three more years—two with the Cubs and one with Cleveland A bad back forced him to retire after only 10 years as a player. But in that one decade, he hit 369 home runs, drove in 1,015 runs, and walked 1,011 times. Kiner hit a home run every 14.11 times at bat; of all the major-league players who had completed their careers at that time, he ranked second in that department only to Babe Ruth. He received the highest honor given to any player when, in 1975, he was elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame in Coo-perstown. In 1995, famed slugger Ted Williams named him one of the original inductees to his Hitters Hall of Fame.

Kiner later became a broadcaster with the New York Mets for more than 50 years.

The Pirates retired Kiner’s number 4 jersey on September 9, 1987. “It was a wonderful day for me,” he said. “I shall always cherish my memories of Pittsburgh as a city with loyal Pirate fans and a true love for baseball.”

Ralph Kiner died on February 6, 2014.

Ralph Kiner hit 369 home runs in an abbreviated 10-year career. “He hit them like he had a bus to catch,” said fellow slugger Ted Williams.
