When it was time for Abigail’s pitch, she climbed onto the stage carrying a copy of Carson Sweete Collins’s book of poetry, The Mermaid’s Song and Other Poems. Then she recited, from memory, the first poem in the book.

I was a girl in a bridal veil,

but I took it off and made a sail

and sailed away on a salty breeze

to tour the world and scout the seas.

When I grew tired of my galleon,

I traded the ship for a milk-white stallion.

I cantered all night by the silvery moon,

then exchanged my horse for a blue balloon

and soared aloft through sun and cloud,

singing my giddy thoughts aloud.

The song I sang was clear and brave.

It reached the folk beneath the wave.

And that’s how I earned my mermaid’s tail:

Just by taking off my veil.
