Chapter 8
Inspector Janice Lee walked into SPECTRE at five thirty looking more awake and refreshed than anyone had a right to look at that hour of the morning. Her straight black hair framed her pretty face and accentuated her flawless skin. She was Asian-American, born and raised in San Francisco.
Normally she was almost as tall as I was. Today, though, she wore black high-heeled boots laced up to her knees, making her an inch or so taller and twice as intimidating. With her dark gray cashmere trench coat, matching gray sweater, and black skirt, she should’ve been walking the runway instead of investigating a murder.
I itched to touch that cashmere coat. The woman had ridiculously fabulous fashion sense.
“Amazing boots,” I said.
She glanced down, nodded. “They’re great for kicking ass.”
I bit back a grin, since grinning wouldn’t be appropriate at the scene of a murder. “It’s good to see you.”
“Yeah, you, too.” She smirked. “I was hoping once you got married, you’d stop seeing dead people.”
“I was hoping the same thing,” I said, trying for lightness. “But that dream has died.”
She shrugged. “Guess we’ll have to accept that this is just your thing.”
“Please bite your tongue,” I said. “We both know it’s not my thing.”
She chuckled and pulled a small notebook and pen from her snazzy cross-body compact leather purse. “So how are you, Brooklyn?”
I was momentarily distracted by the sound of her voice. Funny, I had forgotten how deep it was. I chalked it up to her being a smoker once upon a time. She had quit several years ago and now she was hooked on those little sour lemon drops that came in fancy tins. Whatever got you through the night, I thought.
“I’m good,” I said, remembering her question. “Except for, you know. This nightmare.” I gestured toward the back room, where we’d found Tailor’s lifeless body.
“Except for that,” she said soberly, and looked around at the activity inside the store. “Give me the rundown. Who’s the victim?”
“His nickname is Tailor. I don’t actually know his real name.” And wasn’t that sad? “He’s just a kid, Janice. Mid-twenties, but a kid. He hangs out here a lot and he also works here part-time.”
“The officers have secured the scene so I’ll see him in a minute.” She nudged her chin. “Who are these people?”
I followed her gaze. “The older guy talking to Derek is Owen Gibbons. He’s the owner of the store. He and Derek knew each other years ago.” I pointed toward the café. “Those three are friends of the victim. One of them works here, too.”
“Which one?”
“The cute blond guy wearing glasses. He works in the countersurveillance department. Over there.” I pointed to the area along the wall in the center of the store. “Owen called him to come in and help do an inventory. We weren’t sure anything was taken until we saw the surveillance video.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I saw all the cameras. So you’ve already looked at the video.”
“Yeah. They’ve got cameras all over the place.” I explained how Owen had called us in the middle of the night and we’d come rushing over.
