When it was all over five hours later, the sun was already up.

Lomond left the Maternity unit, carrying his wife’s overnight holdall, full of an exhaustive collection of ointments, special clothes, a mood board pinned with photos of happy memories and inspirational quotes to help Eilidh through labour.

Lomond stared blankly at the pavement as he walked towards the car. Numb. His head a shambles. He kept thinking about Eilidh’s things, and what would he do with it all. He had never had to think about such practical concerns when someone dies in hospital, like “what happens to all their things?”

The answer was simple: someone has to take them away. They won’t just bin it all for you. There’s no all-inclusive mop-up service other than for medical waste and mopping up blood. Everything else would have to be carried home.

In the end, he was glad they hadn’t let him into theatre. That would only have made things worse.

When he got into the car, he noticed a smear of blood on the side of his face from when he had said goodbye to Eilidh on the operating table.

Over the course of forty-five minutes, he had gone from expectant father, to new father, to grieving father, and finally to widower.

It was the car seat in the back that set him off properly. He had kept it together up till then. Unable to cry. Now he cracked. Fully. He rested his head on the steering wheel, and cried his guts out.

There were only two things he wanted to hear.

His wife’s voice.

And his baby son crying.
