CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

“Where was it, again?”

Gail was following a uniformed officer to a spot where he said he’d seen tyre marks, to the east of the site.

He pointed. “Over there.”

She squinted. They were separated from the track he was indicating by a thicket of hedges and a fair amount of mud.

“And there’s prints in the mud, right there.” He indicated the ground beneath the hedges.

“Good work, PC…?”

“PC Laurence, Ma’am.”

“You don’t have to call me that, I’m a civilian.”

He shrugged and walked away.

She eyed the prints in the mud, and the track beyond. She could just about make out the tyre tracks.

It might be nothing. It might be a farm vehicle.

“PC Laurence?” she called back.

He turned back to her. “Yes?”

“That track. You don’t happen to know where it leads, do you?”

“I think it loops back round to the road. It doesn’t go anywhere, really.”

Perfect.

“Thanks. But how do we access it? Does it go past the entrance?”

A shrug. “I guess it comes out of the car park, but I’m not sure.”

“Great. Thanks again.”

Gail took some photos, then texted Gav and headed back to the pool. Gav was on the other side of the site, helping the police finish their search there. Gail strode to the tea room and the exit, hoping Gav would catch her up.

He was already waiting for her in the car park. “What’s up? I was grabbing my lunch.”

She smiled. “You and your packed lunches.” She checked her watch. “Blimey, half one already. Where did the morning go?”

He shrugged. “What have you found?”

“There’s a track running around the eastern side of the site. Uniform found tyre tracks, and boot prints leading to it.”

“They did?”

“It could be the way the killer brought the body in.”

“It could indeed.” Gavin turned away from her. “Let’s take a look.”

“Hold on a minute.” Gail pulled out her phone. “We don’t know where we’re going yet.”

“Ah. Well, I assumed—”

“Let’s not assume. Let’s pretend we know what we’re doing, and use a map.”

“Sorry.”

She gave him a glancing punch on the arm. “I’m toying with you.” She examined the Ordnance Survey maps app on her phone. “There’s a line here, an unfinished track. That’ll be it.”

“Lead the way.”

“I shall.” Gail strode away from the cars, making for a gap in the hedge.

“Watch the ground for tyre marks,” she said as she walked.

“I’m recording this. But the ground’s dry. I can’t see anything. You sure Uniform found tracks?”

“There’s some boggy ground round there, apparently it forms a lake at the top when it’s wet enough.”

“And that’s enough for prints and tracks to be left.”

“Exactly. Presumably whoever left them didn’t realise.”

She continued walking. The track turned to the right, following the edge of the site. A fence ran between them and the woods, and on their left were open fields.

“It’s quite an anomaly, this place,” Gav said.

Gail continued scanning the ground as she walked. “How so?”

“This area’s all gorse and deciduous trees. Here it’s conifers. I wonder why.”

“Perhaps the owners have cultivated it, over the years.”

“It feels older than that.”

“Could have had any number of owners.
