Chapter 13

I had to put off my visit to West Cork, as things at the paper got hectic. So many items to cover in a very short time. Not only did we have to write articles about the Tidy Towns committee meeting and their plans to clean up and beautify the main squares and thoroughfares, we also had to cover a whole pile of other events such as the pony-club competitions, the camogie team’s forthcoming match in the county championship semi-final, the cub scout charity race and other team sports and school tournaments. Then there was the new Community Alert scheme started by the Guards, the blood-donor campaign and other social services. This was one busy little town.

We worked hard to cover everything and to give it all a fun, new twist in the layout and design of each page. Audrey, despite her ditzy blonde look, proved a terrific addition to our staff, with her talent for writing snappy prose and her great marketing skills. She and Dan were soon a team I came to rely on for nearly every news item.

Then my outing with Colin hit the news.

“You’re in Hello Magazine,” Sinead panted one morning, her face pink with excitement.

“What?” I asked. “Who?”

“You.” She beamed, holding up an issue of said magazine. She flicked through a few pages and then showed me a fuzzy shot of Colin planting a kiss on my cheek in front of a gaggle of women in the gardens of Kilkenny castle. The picture was a little out of focus, but there was no doubt—that woman with the bad hairdo, closing her eyes, being kissed by a Hollywood star was me.

I nearly fainted. “Holy shit.”

“And OK Magazine,” Dan, who had just arrived, said behind me.

“The Irish Times too,” Audrey laughed, showing me the page on her phone.

I felt dizzy. “Shit. I knew this would happen.”

“Irish Independent on line one,” Mary said from the switchboard. “Will you take it, Finola? They want to speak to you.”

“You went out with Colin Foley?” Sinead asked.

“I’ll take it in my office, Mary,” I said.

“Hi, Finola, I’m Michelle O’Dea, features editor of The Indo,” a woman announced. “I think we met a couple of times.”

I sank down in my chair. “Yes, we did. What can I do for you?”

“It’s about you and Colin Foley. What can you tell us about that picture and the rumours about your involvement with him?”

“No comment,” I snapped. “What the hell did you expect me to say?”

She laughed. “Yeah, yeah, I know. But hey, we’re colleagues. I mean, just between you and me.”

“And the whole country?” I filled in. “Do you really expect me to believe you’d keep whatever I say confidential?”

“Ah, well, no. But the pictures are out there now, and they tell their own story. I’d say the cat is out of the bag whatever you say or do.”

“What cat? There is no cat. Colin and I are friends. That’s all I’m going to say.”

She let out an ironic laugh. “Yeah, right.”

“Anything else I can do for you?” I asked sweetly.
