Chapter 15

Dinner was, as expected, apocalyptic. What might have been pancakes was edible – just – once the girls had saved the jam from the jar they had dropped on the floor. No glass. We checked. I was ready to call for pizza, but Luui wrinkled her nose, and Bell said she didn’t like pizza, although I think she was worried that any interruption might spoil the moment, or that any second her parents would walk through the door, or Vickers, perhaps even Kuno.

I expected all of them, but worried that the first person through the door would be Avery.

Luui slipped off her chair and ran to the door. Bell and I waited, and then smiled at the sound of the lock turning and the little palm smacks Luui made with her hands, clapping at a job well done.

“Okay,” I said, as Luui climbed back onto her chair. “I have a plan.”

Luui lifted her head and hit with me with her big, soft, brown, and trusting eyes. Bell simply nodded, took a sip of water, and waited.

“I’m going to find two small backpacks,” I said. “And then I want you to go through my apartment and find warm clothes you can almost fit and put them in the backpacks.” I reached out to brush Luui’s hair with my fingers, adding, “You have some of your clothes here already.”

“Aap,” she said.

“Take all of them. Okay?”

“Yep, Pretty Lady.”

Luui slipped off her seat again and then padded around the table to take Bell’s hand. I followed them as far as the hall, grabbed the two packs I knew I had in the cupboard, and then left them to it. I checked the door was locked, then walked back to the kitchen to look out of the window as the taxis I had seen on the road disgorged their passengers, all of whom carried cameras with long, intrusive lenses.

I took a breath, easier now that I had a plan, and got back to work.

Duneq called as I walked to the balcony. I ignored it. I knocked on the partition, calling Hans’ name. I heard the creak of a lawn chair, and wondered if he had been waiting, or just enjoying the view.

“I do need your help,” I said, as I thought about the first stages of the plan. “But it’s a big ask.”

“You’re in trouble?”

“I’m heading that way,” I said.

“I’ve seen the news.” Hans pointed at the road, following the path of a white transit van with his finger. “That’s Nuuk TV. They won’t be alone.”

“I know.”

“Whatever you need.” Hans smiled and if the partition hadn’t been there, I would have hugged him.

“I’ll be right back,” I said, just as the first heavy knock landed on my door.

I found the girls in my bedroom, frozen with their hands on different items of clothing, eyes fixed on the door.

“Ignore it,” I whispered. “It’s locked.” I reached for the first pack, smiled at the number of bras inside, and guessed it was Luui’s work. “Perfect,” I
