Chapter 8

Colt asked me if he could use my office to interview Gretchen when he arrived, so I decided to sit at the bar and chat with Dawson while we waited. Based on the overall demeanor that Dawson seemed to be communicating, I had to assume that my bar manager was preoccupied with his Harley and the overwhelming hassle that Tricia stealing it had brought to his life. Of course, I wasn’t sure that the situation with the Harley would have caused him to be late for work for the first time since I’d owned the bistro. Perhaps there was actually something more going on.

“My friend, Leyton Post, is in town,” he answered when I asked about his tardiness.

“Leyton Post? I don’t recognize the name. Is he a friend from your past?”

He nodded. “I worked with Leyton when I was trying to support myself and fulfill my dream of being a songwriter. He managed a few bands back then who he felt would be a good fit for my music, so we collaborated a few times. I haven’t worked with him since deciding to take a break from full-time songwriting, but Leyton currently manages a band who seems to be shooting up the charts faster than anyone can track them, and he’s decided they need to get on the road and tour.”

“Good for him. That must be very gratifying. Did Leyton travel all the way to Holiday Bay to tell you about this band, or was he simply passing through and decided to stop to say hi?”

“Neither. Leyton wants me to take some time off from bartending to write for this band full-time. He seems certain that I am exactly the guy who can provide the sound the band will need to go all the way to the top.”

My heart sank. I wasn’t sure why. This was an incredible opportunity for Dawson. A real career maker. I should be thrilled for him. And I was. But I was also sad for me. “Are you going to do it?” I asked.

He shrugged. “I’m not sure. I told Leyton I’d think about it. He asked me to give him an answer by the end of the week.”

“I guess it’s a good opportunity.”

He nodded. “It is. The band he’s working with is good, and they might actually make it to the top like Leyton feels they will. If I’m the one who helps them get there, then that should be what I need to make the transition into the big leagues. There was a time when a chance like this would have sent me over the moon.”

“And now?”

He lifted a shoulder. “I’m not sure. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted. I tried so hard to support myself with my songwriting but could never seem to catch the break I needed, but with a full-time gig with a band on the way up, supporting myself wouldn’t be a problem.”

“It sounds like you should do it,” I said, trying valiantly to keep the catch in my voice from being obvious.
