CHAPTER SEVEN
âI CANâT BELIEVE weâre actually boarding this plane.â
Nathan slung an arm around Jessicaâs shoulders. He could hardly believe it, either. After so long in New Zealand there had been times heâd thought he might never leave. Going home was something heâd dreaded, although now he was getting excited about work again. Banking, not so much. But the company was something he was passionate about, and if he left it for much longer...well, there was only so many meetings that his poor assistant could defer on his behalf. It was one part of his career that he definitely wanted to salvage.
âYou know everythingâs going to work out while youâre gone, right?â he asked.
Jessica leaned into him, her arm finding his waist. âYeah, but even if youâre right about everything, whatâs the best that can happen?â
âThe fraud is exposed and you sue them,â he said, frowning at the worried look on her face.
âAnd thatâll take how long?â she asked with a groan. âAnd if theyâve got no accessible money, I might never get anything back and Iâll lose the farm anyway.â
âYou wonât.â
âI could.â
He held her closer, their bodies skimming as they walked side by side. âI wonât let that happen.â She might not be comfortable with him spending his money to help her, but he was, and that was what mattered. The fact that neither she nor her grandfather would have ever expected his help was what made him so determined to offer it.
âMr. Bell, right this way, sir.â
He nudged Jessica with his shoulder when she glanced at him, shook her head and rolled her eyes.
âPerks of the rich and famous, huh? The VIP lounge and then first to board the plane.â
âHey, you can always ride in coach if youâd prefer.â
She pretended to be horrified and clung to his side, laughing. âNo way! Iâm already tasting my first glass of champagne. And besides, if Iâm about to be poor as a church mouse, I might as well enjoy my one chance at luxury.â
Nathan nodded to the attendant as she ushered them down the air bridge. He was about to board a plane and head home. Funny, but it felt as if he was leaving home rather than returning to it.
He slipped his arm from around Jessica and reached for her hand instead. She glanced across at him, her smile infectious. It was also hard to believe that this gorgeous woman was going to be in his life for such a short time, because it felt as if heâd known her his entire life. Letting her go was going to be one of the hardest things he ever did, especially now he finally felt like himself again. Or at least a version of himself.
Although facing his house, the office that he hadnât set foot in since heâd found his wife there, was going to be bloody hard, too.
âYou okay?â
He squeezed her hand. âFine. Just hard to get my head around going back, thatâs all.â
Her smile was full of warmth when she shone it in his direction.
