CHAPTER 14

RAM

I tried to keep my breathing steady as I stared into Manolo’s eyes. He stood there, his arms crossed, watching me with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. I’d been staying with him for the past week, and I’d been hoping he would learn the Bhangra with me. I danced the Bhangra in nearly all my movies, and I wanted to share more of myself with him.

“Manolo, let me show you how it’s done,” I said, hoping I could convince him. “Once you learn the basic steps, it’s a snap.” We were in his backyard next to the pool. “It’s just you and me since the boys went shopping, so don’t be embarrassed if you make mistakes.”

I searched on my phone for the perfect song and settled on “Tunak Tunak Tun” by Dahler Mehndi. It’s an iconic song known throughout India, and was guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face.

“I’ll fall on my ass faster than Hugo,” Manolo laughed. “Dancing doesn’t come easy to me. I think it’s because growing up, adults insisted on boys dancing with girls, and even then I knew I preferred men.”

“Men dance together in India, well, more than they do here. Which is odd, considering being gay is more taboo back home.” I shrugged.

The music began, and I began with the basic step. “This is called the Jhummar, and it’s part of the entire dance. Once you master this step, we can move on to the more complex movements.”

I taught him the basics of the dance, and slowly the intricate moves began to make sense to him. He followed my lead gracefully, and I found myself getting lost in the beauty of his movements.

“You are more coordinated than our clumsy friend Hugo,” I said, then Manolo tripped.

“I’ve got you!” I caught him, then he gazed into my eyes for a moment before pecking me on the cheek. “One more time, from the beginning.” I smiled, then I stopped the music. "You've got this, Manolo." I turned the song back on and we started over. After a minute, Manolo laughed. "I think I’m getting it!"

The sun was setting and Manolo’s backyard had transformed into a romantic oasis, illuminated by the golden light. I felt a deep connection to him, something I’d never felt before. We both smiled as we kept dancing, our movements becoming more fluid with each step. I no longer focused on teaching him, instead I became lost in the beauty of the dance and the moment.

The music ended, but we kept dancing until we were both breathless. We stopped in each other’s arms, Manolo's hands around my waist and mine on his shoulders.

“I haven’t had this much fun in years,” Manolo grinned. We both blushed as he leaned in close and our lips met in a gentle kiss that sent electricity throughout my body. We stayed like this for what felt like an eternity, savoring the moment before finally breaking apart with a sigh. “Thank you,” Manolo said softly, looking into my eyes.
