In Chinese wushu circles, the Shaolin Temple has long enjoyed a great reputation, where shaolinquan has been practiced by monks for generations. The movement sets of shaolin boxing, totaling 72 sets, are all-embracing. All the movement sets attach great importance to basic skills. For instance, children’s kung fu requires practitioners to receive very strict training from childhood, so as to master such complicated movements as “sleeping arhat” and “heel-up leg lift.”

Taijiquan (or tai chi chuan, Chinese shadow-boxing), emphasizes body movements following mind movements, tempering robustness with gentleness and graceful postures. It is still a popular form of exercise today. Since it stresses the improvement of both skills and breathing, taijiquan can regulate the nervous and respiratory systems, to prevent and treat ill health.
