Chapter 15

Traffic on the Bay Bridge wasn’t heavy at this hour. Click knew it would probably be a nightmare on the way back. The area around Telegraph Avenue consisted of a lot of one-way streets, some of them dead ending in massive concrete flowerpots. It wasn’t ideal for driving a boat of a hearse around.

UC-Berkeley was on break, so students didn’t flood the area south of the campus. Chilton Way was only a block long, between Parker and Blake streets. Walter circled around for what seemed like an hour before finding a space he could squeeze the hearse into.

“What’s the point?” Scatter got out. “We’ve driven down Chilton about a bazillion times. There’s no such address.”

They were parked about six blocks away. “I need to get out. All that circling made me dizzy,” Click said.

The area was a mix of houses, apartment buildings, businesses and campus structures. Chilton Way itself was completely residential, although just a block away, Telegraph Avenue was almost all businesses. “What are we expecting to find here?” Walter said.

“Hookers,” Scatter said.

“We don’t know that,” Click adjusted her beret.

“It doesn’t matter,” Scatter pointed. “Look, there’s 2543 and right next door is 2537—there is no such address as 2539 Chilton Way. Not unless we walked into a Harry Potter novel.”

The houses were close together, the street crowded with mature trees and lush landscaping. Click looked down the driveway between the two buildings. At the end of an ivy-clogged passage, she saw a door. “That must be it.”

“Can’t be,” Scatter said. “That’s probably the back door of a business on Telegraph.”

Click pushed her way down the narrow walkway, foliage brushing her as she walked. Scatter and Walter were on her heels. She pointed to a plaque on the stucco next to the door. “There we go, 2539,” she said.

“Looks like a residence,” Scatter said. “Maybe Maribel got it wrong, or maybe the address was falsified in the Hershadelli books on purpose.”

Click pushed the doorbell. Gongs sounded from within. She scanned the face of the narrow building, seeing no windows. There was loads of gingerbread trim above the porch canopy, fancy corbels and brackets. Stained glass formed most of the front door. What an odd building.

The door creaked open. No one stood in the entry. Scatter shot a glance at Click and stepped back off the porch.

“Creatures of the night,” a creaking voice drifted out, the words dripping with Eastern European tones. “Visiting in the afternoon. What can this mean?” Vhat cahn thees min? Click heard.

She swallowed and took a step forward. “Hello? We’re supernatural investigators, following a lead,” Click said.

“Huh.”

The three of them stood outside the open door, not knowing what to do.

“Come in before the flies do,” the voice said. “What are you waiting for, Christmas?”’

A vestibule formed of draped pink and red velvet led inside. There only seemed to be a single room. Centered, an old woman sat at a round table. Like the vestibule, the table was draped in velvet. A chunk of crystal sat on the table, giving off an unhealthy looking green light.
