The truth about colouration in bettas

Now we’ve got to the end of this quick introduction to betta colouration I think it’s only fair that I come clean and admit that, in reality, betta colouration is far more complicated than the text above would have you believe. This is due to the nature of pigment cells (a.k.a. chromatophores). Pigment cells in fish develop from embryonic stem cells. These stem cells can develop into a range of different chromatophores that in actual fact can concentrate pigments of more than one colour. To give you an idea, here’s a list of different types of chromatophore and the pigments they can contain:
