Chapter Twenty-Two
Weeks and then months flew by. The crisp, cool air of autumn and winter was soon replaced with the blare of the sun. Nevada was unusually hot for spring with temperatures soaring well over ninety degrees. The lack of humidity and cool climate of the underground laboratory made it somewhat bearable.
Progress at Broom Lake occurred at a snail’s pace yet Andreas’s airmen, engineers, and scientists were decades, if not centuries ahead of the world in scientific knowledge. Andreas liked working with the small crew of geniuses inside of the hangar. They rebuilt a quarter of the craft that landed outside of Roswell. Using the baby craft for clues, each piece that they demagnetized and put into place sped up the process.
Like most top secret operations, the general’s engineers were not sure what went on underground and the German scientists underneath the earth were not sure what went on in the hangar. Both sets of recruits were not allowed to mingle.
Andreas’s experience as a pilot caused him to be much more interested in the craft than the ABs underneath the earth. The ABs were probably dead, but the spacecraft had all kinds of potential for the future of aviation. He guessed the craft had something to do with the mysterious foo fighters that he and so many of the pilots had seen during the war.
The Nazi scientists disgusted him more and more with each passing week. Their work was important and he tried to withhold all judgment. However, the group of scientists was constantly pushing the envelope. Andreas was tempted to break Jaeger’s jaw after another request for more women. He had seen one of the women murdered, but never asked about the other three. They were expendable parts to their research.
The general was in way too deep. It was all or nothing. He asked Lamphrey and Bolantano once more to round up some more test subjects as he liked to call them.
The Nazis might have been repulsive, but they produced results. In complete awe and amazement, Andreas was shown the completed artificial womb and the manmade fertilization process.
“General, can you believe that we can create a baby by a test tube?” Jaeger said with pride. “You are looking at the future. Sex will be a thing of the past. It is now possible to reproduce by inserting and deleting certain gene sequences inside a laboratory.”
Andreas was more than impressed but their success came at a price. “Doctors, great work. But I would rather reproduce the old fashioned way with lust, passion, and even love.”
The three doctors laughed as if lust and love were for the naïve.
The next morning, right before dawn, Andreas was already caked with sweat as he faithfully worked out inside of headquarters. One of the empty offices was changed into a gym. Sometimes others on base would join him, but not today. He was the most disciplined soldier on the base when it came to staying in shape. He had just turned fifty, but refused to give in to old age.
