When Bessie opened her eyes, the intruder was the first thing that came to mind. Hurrying through her shower, she decided to skip breakfast in favour of a very early morning walk. As the sun wasnât up yet, she picked up a torch and slipped it into her coat pocket. It was still overcast and windy, and Bessie found herself questioning her sanity when a light rain began to fall.
As she approached the last cottage, she began to look for footprints, but the wind and the rain seemed to have obscured even the ones that she knew should have been there.
âHello?â she called in a low voice as she approached the sliding door. âIf youâre going to call, you need to shout,â she muttered to herself. âHello?â she said as she climbed the steps, speaking only slightly more loudly than before.
Switching on her torch, she shined it into the cottage. It was completely empty, just as it should be. Bessie felt as if she should rub her eyes and look again. Sheâd been certain she had seen a bag and maybe a pair of shoes on the floor in the room the previous evening. Was it possible that her eyes had been playing tricks on her in the dark?
Maybe I didnât really see a person in the cottage, either, she thought as she slowly walked back down the steps to the beach. Feeling grateful that she hadnât rung the police, Bessie walked around the cottage, looking into every window. There was no sign that anyone had been there, and the windows were all shut and locked, just as they should have been.
Sighing, Bessie slipped the torch back into her pocket and continued along the beach. When she reached the stairs to Thie yn Traie, she decided to turn around. It was still dark, it was cold, and it was raining. Sheâd take another walk later, when it would at least be lighter.
Back at home, she made tea and toast and then picked up the book sheâd discarded the previous evening. She was struggling through another chapter when someone knocked on her door a short while later.
âGood morning,â Andrew said when sheâd opened the door. âI woke up early and couldnât get back to sleep. Have you already had your walk on the beach this morning?â
âI have, and itâs a bit cold and wet for another one, I think,â Bessie said, glancing up at the sky. âWhy donât you come in and have a cuppa?â
âThatâs the best offer Iâve had all day,â he laughed as he walked into the kitchen. âBut you were reading. Iâve interrupted.â
âYouâre welcome to interrupt that book. Iâm not enjoying it.â
âNo?â
âI donât know if itâs just me or if itâs because the author worked with another author on this title, but the characters just donât feel the same.â
âDoes that mean youâll be happy to take me sightseeing today, then?â Andrew asked.
âIâm always happy to do that, even if Iâm in the middle of a good book. But I thought youâd seen most of the islandâs sights by now.
