Part Five

“I’ve applied the healing. She wasn’t wounded too deeply. The pain is mostly coming from several rib bones she broke in her fall. She’s extremely lucky she didn’t break her spine landing against a rock like that. I can’t fix a broken back.”

“She’ll wake up soon?”

“Yes. Soon enough.”

A far off door thumped shut. Footsteps padded nearby, however, and then the sound of chair legs scraping on a wooden floor. Any bird or forest noise sounded farther off than the door and only came from one direction.

Not a forest. But where?

Slowly, touch returned as well as hearing. A straw mattress underneath her body crinkled and the weight of something draped over her pulled as she breathed. Speaking of breathing, that hurt. A lot. However, she couldn’t quite remember why.

Was that a hand caressing her cheek? No, the elemental. It’s here. A small, forgotten memory resurfaced. The smallest cushion of wind that slowed her down right before the pain exploded through her back.

Why can’t I see?

Blackness filled her vision. Her vision, unlike her other senses, didn’t appear to be returning. Then she remembered.

My eyes are still shut. Silly me.

Opening them required a lot more effort than usual. She deliberately forced them open a crack and nearly went blind from the bright light. She must have made a sound or an obvious movement as she shut her eyes because whoever was there in the room with her rushed over and reduced the light.

“Glad to see you awake at last, Sorceress. Is that better for the light?”

She flopped her head towards his voice and cracked her eyes open once more. There was still light enough to see the room’s furnishings and her sole visitor. Even with him silhouetted by the light she knew who he was by his voice.

“Yes. That’s much better. Why are you here? And where am I?”

“I am here because it’s my duty to check up on you and make sure you are healed properly. I did hire you myself so therefore your safety is my responsibility.” He bowed deeply. “I am most ashamed and sorry for what happened. I failed to protect you properly. Please, accept my apology.”

“It was an ambush. Right?”

“Yes, indeed.”

“Did you get samples?”

“No. We weren’t able to kill it.”

“What?” Philliya tried to sit up and gasped at the pain.

“Lie down! Please rest.” Larence half jumped to his feet and only sat down once she stopped trying to hurt herself.

Philliya breathed in carefully. “Why not?”

“That was the beast king. We were able to leave because it left after killing one of my men. We must have been too close to the edge of the forest for it to feel comfortable continuing the attack. Or it might have heard our reinforcements. Rodan and his men appeared shortly after it left and they assisted our wounded, and yourself, back to the town. This is the inn we stayed in previously.”

“I see. I’m sorry for your loss.” She shuddered with a sudden chill. To be that close to death and survive it.
