The Communist Party did not only destroy churches, synagogues, and mosques in its quest to destroy religion. It also launched an extensive anti-religious propaganda campaign designed to re-educate the masses and foster what they called scientific atheism. Rumours were spread around the country that people were contracting syphilis after kissing the religious icons that were so central to Russian Orthodox tradition. School curricula were also adapted to prioritise anti-religion education, with the propaganda permeating lessons in unrelated subjects, including grammar and mathematics.
