Chapter Fourteen: A Gnome’s Tale

The ruby’s hum awakened River. It’d never done that before. A cold breeze blew all the way through the tunnel and reached the dome. The goats bellowed in fear. Something wicked passed overhead. The gnomes scattered into their chambers, and the dome quickly emptied.

King Rodra, his face creased with worry, emerged from his chamber, accompanied by a younger gnome, dressed in armor. A small army of gnomes entered the main room behind him, all dressed for battle. The King turned to River. He pointed at the gnome beside him and spoke.

“This is my son.” He paused, took a deep breath, and continued, “Gnomes are known for our honesty. I must be honest and tell you I’m afraid. What passed above us is explicitly evil. There’s no good in it at all. My scouts have said that it is unlike any creature they’ve seen before—only heard of in legends. If the four kings have been resurrected as we suspect, then Reheloth of the Dragons is back, and the dragons can’t be far behind. I was just a boy when the last dragon walked the earth...”

Abbadon spread his wings out and waited for an upstream wind. He flew with it, spewing fire across the village beneath him, not caring who was caught in the flames. He was on a mission, and he was determined to see it through. The last and most powerful of the dragons, his skin shimmered with a red glow, sharp spikes ran up the length of his spine, and his iridescent wings drew fear. He was beautiful to behold but deadly to anyone who opposed him.

No one had ever won when they went up against that dragon, except the mighty King Reheloth. He had conquered Abbadon and claimed full control of the dragons, though Abbadon was the only one left. Even with only one dragon, Reheloth was a force to be reckoned with, and one few wanted to go up against.

With no opposition, Reheloth conquered city after city and destroyed village after village with the help of Abbadon, and still he pressed on. He feared no one. Three kings had gone before him, but none, not even the great Rtharo, had been able to control the dragons. Reheloth was the evilest force Savania ever had to deal with. Rtharo was dead and gone, Seifus long past buried, and the one remaining king had been stripped of his throne. He ruled the whole land, from the North to the South, even the elven forest to the west.

Armed with a merciless dragon, Reheloth grew even more ruthless. Abbadon flew over the gnome kingdom daily, torching trees with every breath in order to chase them out of their homes and into captivity.

The gnomes had a glorious kingdom then. Reheloth wanted their woodworking skills for himself to decorate his castle. He wanted to study them and duplicate their ways. Then, simply because he could, he slaughtered them all.

One by one, Abbadon destroyed the gnome villages, charring the earth they ran to, obliterating their numbers in Reheloth’s name.
