Forty-Five
Colt drove across the Turkish border. It'd been almost twenty-four hours since Damascus. No one had followed them out of the capital. They were in the clear, finally.
A moment of peace?
Probably not.
Colt hadn't known a day of peace since his child passed away. It was a gnawing feeling. Teeth biting down on his flesh, but never tearing away the pain, just making it worse.
Drake had Colt avoid all main roads on their way out of Syria. He'd instructed Colt to drive down the old paths that Bedouin herders had used for centuries. They weren't paved, but the sand had been so packed down from hundreds of years of use that they were practically as good as any paved road in England.
The two men didn't talk much on the drive. There wasn't much to say. They now knew where they were headed: Golovinka. Russia. Aya. The Ammonium Nitrate.
As the sun pierced the horizon, Colt rubbed his brow and thought of his past, of the moment he'd learned his life was over.
"He's got cancer," Price said to him over the phone.
She was in Langley. Busy, as usual. He was in a hotel in Berlin, on assignment. It was 1997.
"What? No," he said.
"It's true."
"How bad is it?"
She didn't respond, but her silence said it all.
"What now?" he asked.
"Can you come home? I need you."
Home? The idea of a place that was permanent, settled. In their five year marriage, Colt and Price had barely shared their home together at the same time for more than three months. Their home was simply an idea, a place they both agreed they would end up one day. A promise that they'd told themselves would become real when they were done with their work and were ready to focus on each other and their family.
Colt had called Graham Howe for dismissal from his Berlin assignment when he heard the news. Howe granted it without question. When he was home, Colt found Cody sick, on his bed, barely breathing. His son's skin pale, his body shaking. The young boy could hardly open his eyes.
Colt drank himself to sleep every night after the diagnosis. It was the only way he could shield himself from the pain and worry. His world was wrought with anguish. It was terrible.
He stayed in Langley until the end.
Until the priest said his final words at the funeral.
He left a rosary on Codyâs grave and then headed back to Berlin, to his assignment.
Price was pissed, but she knew it was the only way he'd be able to stay alive.
He needed work. She needed work.
Colt shook his head and focused on the sun, which was climbing above the lip of the desert's edge. The road was endless. He shouldn't have thought about the past. Those memories needed to die.
"You okay?" Drake asked, noticing Colt's sullen expression.
"Yeah, mate. I'm fine," Colt said, shaking his head. "Just tired."
"What's wrong?"
"Demons, that's all."
Drake nodded.
He understood what that meant.
The past sneaks up on you and tries to pull you back sometimes, but you can't let it.
