7. The Adventure of the Poisoned Affair

by Luke Benjamen Kuhns

An Excerpt from the Personal Diaries of Doctor John H. Watson: The Adventure of the Poisoned Affair.

I have been asked to briefly recap the Adventure of the Poisoned Affair not for the sake of telling a good story but in the hopes that the names involved in this affair can be cleared. Though the entire story is written in my notes and I do wish to publish it in full length however the shortness of time has propelled me to miss out on some of the intriguing elements of this case and skip to the chase. I must be brief; as Holmes would say, time is of the essence.

PART 1:

“How do you know you are who you think you are?” Asked Sherlock Holmes. I was shocked at the phrase that uttered from his mouth. Very little time did he devote to philosophical or theological questions.

“Good, God Holmes, where did that come from?” I asked

“It was just a thought. Have you ever wondered, Watson, about the people we have met? The good the bad; some times I think what these people might not have been, who they were had they not been corrupted by the infectious disease of crime.”

“I say Holmes, I can’t but agree. However, I am stunned at this sudden change to philosophical questions.” I said,

“Is it philosophical to try and understand the human condition and what a person would have been in another frame?

To us we see people either effected, hurt, or killed by crime or people who are either effecting, hurting or killing for crime. For us we see people through these lenses. But nevertheless these people are more than that. They are son’s or daughters, Mothers, Fathers, Friends, even colleagues.

And that is what begs the question: how do you know you are who you think you are, as we are all different people to different people.”

It took me some time to respond to my friend’s thought. I had no idea what seed was planted into his mechanical brain to produce a thought such as this, but if one man could turn a philosophical thought into a clear deduction of the human condition it was most certainly Sherlock.

“Well Holmes,” I finally said, “I suppose you are right. Indeed, to change ones perspective will inevitably help one gain further understanding of the ever-changing human condition.”

“And so it should.” He finished and reached for his pipe as he raised from his seat and packed it full.

“Identity Watson,” Holmes said as he lit his pipe and glared out the window, “its becoming an ever growing concern, and I would go as far as to say that in the near future every-ones struggle for identity will inevitably lead to an identity-confused society.”

“Holmes, any deduction you make - whether it be on the simplest of things of the grandest - I would wholeheartedly accept your judgement.” I replied.

“And so it would seem we have a visitor,” said Holmes changing the topic from one we would never bring up again bar once.
