CHAPTER VII

It was exactly eight o’clock that evening, with darkness over the capital, when Ethel reappeared in her father’s office, dressed in flying kit and looking, except for her dark hair, remarkably like the similarly clad Golden Amazon conversing with Chris Wilson at the desk.

“Good,” the Amazon approved, glancing at the clock. “Right on time, Ethel. You’ve made all necessary personal arrangements for your departure? We may be away quite some while.”

“Everything,” Ethel assented quietly.

“And we’re not making this move a moment too soon either,” Chris Wilson said grimly. “This morning two important industrialists were reported as having committed suicide. Tonight — in case you haven’t heard — there’s the news of one more having done the same thing. Edgar Branson threw himself out of his hotel window, twenty-seven stories up. at six o’clock this evening.”

“The head of Radio and Television Combine?” Ethel inquired.

“The same,” the Amazon agreed, her face set. “What is more, a further financial landslide was the cause. You may not grasp the significances behind all this, Ethel, but it means that Voltique has, by diamond-cornering, wiped out the financial power of a copper king, a metal alloys king and a radio television king one after the other, the three central pins round which our present industrial civilization revolves. One person, so disposed, in control of those three things could bring any commercial enterprise to a standstill.”

“Then doesn’t that make our Venusian plan superfluous?” Ethel asked. “Presumably it is Voltique who has done all this — so where is the advantage in smashing up his diamond field?”

“The advantage that he can’t maintain the initiative he’s got without constant backing of more diamonds, with which to corner and buy in the subsidiary financial concerns, which though smaller are just as vital to the framework. He’s got started, but our job is to stop him continuing.” The Amazon shrugged and straightened up, fastened the clasp of her scarlet-lined cape about her throat.

“Well, we’re wasting time talking here. We have to be on our way — if you’re ready?”

“Entirely,” the girl agreed. “So — ’bye for now, Dad.” She turned away as the Amazon strode towards the door — then Chris Wilson’s voice followed them.

“Hey, Rosy Cheeks, just a minute! Am I your father or not? Since when did I cease to rate a goodbye kiss?”

Ethel started and then smiled back from the doorway. Raising a hand with the palm horizontal, she blew him a kiss and then followed the Amazon’s tall, lithe figure down the main corridor, her cape flowing in the breeze of the fans. So at length they gained the outdoors.

“I have everything ready,” the Amazon said, as they crossed the wide expanse at the rear of the Dodd Building. “The Ultra-Plus is ready fuelled and the three remote-control ships are on a separate landing field ready for the take-off once we get into the air and start controlling them.”

Ethel nodded, but she did not speak. Together she and the Amazon continued walking until the Amazon pointed
