I screamed as I was torn apart and then put together again. I stopped screaming when I realised it didn't actually hurt. It was the strangest feeling in the world, accompanied by blinding white light that made me squeeze my eyes shut. I tried to reach for Heather and Tamsia, but my body wasn't quite there.

My feet suddenly hit hard ground and I stumbled, collapsing to my knees. The bright light no longer pushed against my eyelids and I slowly blinked them open.

I was no longer in the barn. The usual hay-covered concrete floor was now cold metal and while the ceiling was just as high as in the barn, it wasn't a wooden roof. It was glass and on the other side I could just about make out moving shapes.

I had to be hallucinating. Too much wine.

"I hate travelling by A-Beam," Tamsia muttered to my left and I turned.

And stared.

She was blue.

What. The. Fuck.

I rubbed my eyes, desperately trying to get rid of the haze. She looked familiar, I’d seen her like before.

It dawned on me. The costume party. She’d been wearing this exact outfit but why was she wearing it again? When did she even have the time to put it on? Where were all our animals? It was just the three of us here.

My thoughts were racing and spinning but my mind wasn’t quite managing to keep up with them or drawing conclusions. This was why I had to be careful with alcohol.

Tamsia looked at me, her blue eyes the only thing that hadn’t changed colour. “Are you okay?”

“I’m dreaming,” I stated confidently, turning to my cousin whose expression mirrored how I was feeling. “I must be dreaming. Quick, pinch me.”

Heather looked dazed and moved slowly, pinching my arm. The slight sting hurt but didn’t wake me.

“Harder,” I demanded, digging my own nails into my arm.

She pinched me again, the pain shooting through me.

Nothing was changing. I wasn’t waking up.

Panic crested in my chest and I shook my cousin. “Harder! Fuck, Heather. Wake me up, fucking wake me up!”

Snapping out of her trance, her gaze locked on me and her palm connected with my cheek. My hands flew to my face, the skin immediately burning from the sudden assault. The pain felt real. The pain was real.

I pulled my arm back and slapped her in return, not sure if I was doing it out of fear, anger, or gratitude. Heather’s second strike followed quickly and I retaliated without thinking about it. I wasn’t in control anymore but I didn’t know how to stop.

“Hey, hey. Stop.” Tamsia interfered by stepping in between us and driving us apart. “Don’t hurt family.”

Heather stomped away, muttering to herself, and I drew my gaze to where Tamsia’s hand was touching my arm.

“Now you know the truth,” she said softly, her voice soft and with a hint of sadness. “You leave?”

Yes. Everything inside me screamed yes and yet, I couldn’t muster the words. Maybe part of me still wanted to believe this was
