CHAPTER 17

A FAREWELL TO MANAUS

Tonight’s action had almost backfired, but I wasn’t putting my faith in results from the federal police search. I was counting on the information Judith could extract from the data copied on the hard drive after I returned to our office in New York. When I left the car to enter the hotel, Fernando stopped me.

“Are you going to walk in with that revolver on your back, Alan?”

Darn, I had forgotten all about it. I should have tossed it on our way back.

“I forgot to throw it away. I’ll leave it in the glove compartment, and I’ll think of disposing of it tomorrow.”

I turned the key to my hotel apartment door and entered as quietly as possible so I wouldn’t disturb Livy, but she wasn’t sleeping. She was in bed, still awake.

“Alan, is that you?”

“Yes, baby, I’m back.”

I went to sit on her side of the bed. “What do you think of going home tomorrow, honey?”

Livy was fully awake now. “Really, Alan? It would be wonderful to go back to see Larissa.”

“You can start packing tomorrow morning. I’ll see to the available flights.” Livy was sitting on the bed, and I put my arms around her. See,” I told her, “no perfume.”

“True, no perfume, but you smell sweaty. Go take a shower, please.”

“Yes, ma’am. Don’t go away. I’ll be right back.”

It was the fastest shower I took in my life.

“How do I smell now, madam, more to your taste?”

“Hmm … yes, you smell very, very good,” Livy murmured with her nose buried in my neck. “And I missed you a lot. I’m sorry I’ve been nasty and gave you a hard time earlier tonight.”

“Oh, I think of a way you could redeem yourself.”

“What would I have to do for that?”

“Here, let me show you.”

“Alan, that tickles.”

The next morning found us in a flurry of excited action. We were going home. After breakfast, Olivia was busy packing, and I was tied up on the phone checking for flights, calling my office and my sister, Jessica. I wanted her to beg our brother to send his car to get us at the airport. Jessica was happy to learn of our return but a bit sad she would have to send her niece back to her parents.

“Larissa is such a joy, Alan. She enchants me. I think I’m going to steal her from you.”

“Well, sis, you will have to negotiate that with her mother. However, I wouldn’t recommend you try. Livy can be a lioness when it comes to her daughter.”

“What? What’s wrong with Larissa?” Livy wanted to know, having heard the mention of our daughter’s name.

“Relax, Livy. Larissa is just fine. I was joking with Jessica—that’s all.”

“Let me talk to her.” She extended her hand to collect the phone from me. “Jessica, hi. Where is Larissa. Is she well? Has she been eating well? How is she feeling? Please, let me talk to her.”

Mothers …

Satisfied that our daughter was well and after exchanging a couple of inane words with Larissa, my wife returned the phone to me and continued with her packing.
