Gudrun drove through the main gates of the mansion and up the long drive. As she pulled to a stop in front of the main entrance, the front door opened and Eamon emerged. She got out of her car, handed the keys to the attendant as he approached, and walked toward Eamon, who was descending the steps.

“Any word?” he asked.

Gudrun shook her head. “His phone goes straight to voicemail.”

“It’s been destroyed,” Eamon said. “We tried to track the signal, but the phone operating chip does not register as functioning.”

“When’s the last time you heard from him?”

“The morning of his last day with Garrett. How ’bout you?”

“Same.” She blinked rapidly, trying her best to hold back tears. Eamon placed his hand on her shoulder. “Garrett is apparently on a hunting retreat. The woman in charge of his household told me that he left early the morning that Alex was scheduled to fly home.

“That was yesterday.” Gudrun’s brows furrowed as she remembered waiting at the airport for him to arrive, her stomach turning and twisting with worry when the last person stepped off the plane and Alex was not there.

“I’ve put the word out. I’m certain we will hear something any minute now—” He paused as his smartphone rang from inside his pants pocket. He withdrew the phone, tapped a button, and held it to his ear. “Yes?” He frowned. “Can you repeat that?” His eyes moved to Gudrun’s. “Code accepted. Proceed.”

Gudrun frowned. Long seconds passed as she watched Eamon listen to whoever was speaking on the other line. Finally, it was his turn to say something. “Then he’s safe?” A heartbeat later, the older man smiled and nodded at Gudrun.

Gudrun felt the air leave her lungs in a shuddering sob as relief washed over her. She forced herself to stand taller, eyes locked on Eamon.

“Yes.” He frowned. “I see. Of course. Get him to the airport now. I will have a private jet pick you up.” He paused and listened. “This number?” He nodded. “Fine. I will text you the details within the next ten minutes. When you land, both myself and an armed unit will be there to make sur—” Another pause and Eamon’s brows furrowed. “Of course. I agree. Just myself and Gudrun Egilsdottir then.” Eamon listened and laughed. “Yes, I trust her.” He met her gaze. “She’s family.”

Gudrun felt tears form in her eyes as another wave of emotion pulsed through her. Eamon smiled and reached out to hold her hand.

“Thank you.” He hung up the phone and raised his eyebrows. “Alex is safe.”

“Who was that?” she asked. “Why wasn’t Alex speaking to you directly?”

“He’s too weak to talk.”

“Why? What happened?”

Eamon released her hand, his eyes blazing with sudden anger. “There was an attack of some sort.” He held up one hand to forestall Gudrun’s questions. “Apparently details must wait until we see them. I have been assured that Alex is fine and no longer in danger.”

“Who were you talking to? You mentioned something about a code being accepted.
