“You realize another bank was robbed, don’t you?” asked Char.

“Yes, as a matter of fact, I do realize another bank was robbed,” said Detective Whitman as he settled back into the chair in his office. “So. May I ask where the three of you were just over an hour ago?”

Phyllis widened her stance and planted her hands on her hips. “We were together. I’ll vouch for these two. They didn’t do it.”

Char nodded. “And I’ll vouch for Phil too. She didn’t do it either.”

Gwyn raised her hand. “Same.”

Detective Whitman shook his head. “I’m sorry. It doesn’t work like that, ladies.”

“Look, the getaway car was an older red four-door sedan. None of us here drive a car like that. That should tell you that it wasn’t us,” said Gwyn. She was feeling anxiety again about being locked up and away from her mother. At least this time she’d gotten a call into her right away. She’d called Kat’s house and spoken to Hazel first. Then she’d hung right up and called Flynn on his cell phone and made him promise not to let Hazel out of his sight, even for a second.

“What it tells me is that you ladies know what the getaway car looks like. I haven’t shared that information with anyone. So if you didn’t do it, then how do you just happen to know what the car looks like?” he asked.

Gwyn pressed her lips between her teeth. Oops.

“Detective, look. We’ve been doing some detective work of our own,” explained Char. “We spoke to Gayleen Welch over at Gayleen’s Wash Emporium. She told us she’d seen the getaway car herself. We only know what it looks like because she described the car to us. We’ve even got a lead on the vehicle. If you’d just let us out, we can help you.”

He chuckled. “I appreciate that, ladies. But I don’t need any help. What I need is for the three of you to stay put until we can get some things straightened out. That wasn’t a very good idea sneaking out like that. It made the three of you look very guilty.”

“But we’re not guilty!” said Char. “Surely you can’t keep us locked up with such little evidence against us.”

Detective Whitman sighed. “Look, ladies, if you wanted out, all you had to do was pay your bail.”

“You don’t think we know that?” said Phyllis. “You think we’re made of money? Why do you think we were selling cookies and snickerdoodles on the street the other day? For shits and giggles?”

He rubbed his temples with the palms of his hands. “Fine, I get that. Listen, I’m working on some things that might be to your advantage. I just wish you would trust me. But I’m telling you. Sneaking out of here is not the answer.”

“But my mother needed me,” said Gwyn. “I had to get to her.”

“Did Ronald Murphy call you?” asked Phyllis, butting in.

Detective Whitman sighed. “Yes. As a matter of fact, he did. He was completely beside himself. He said the three of you and another old lady accosted him yesterday.
